First pictures from Santa Monica's Alt Car Expo 2007 - Electrum Spyder and Vectrix scooter

The Alt Car Expo here in Santa Monica starts this morning. Last night, on the Santa Monica Pier, some of the organizers and exhibitors met for a swanky get-together. I'm not one to pass up a tasty event like that, so I went. And look what I found parked outside - the updated Electrum Spyder and the new Vectrix electric scooter. We'll have more on these vehicles before the weekend is out, but I thought you'd enjoy some pics before the more serious info-gathering begins. If you only have time for one click, make sure it's this one - to see what I'm pretty sure is the Spyder's, um, unusual spedometer.

Man, they really need to do something about those wheels on the Spyder. They're repulsive.

This should probably have also been in the "Universal Electric Vehicle" category; they're really starved for news :)
I dunno about this car... sure, it's $20k less than a Tesla Roadster, but the Electrum Spyder is completely inferior, and I doubt UEV has even _thought_ about NHTSA regulations yet...

they seriously need a designer, that is totally void of any creative forethought, it looks like a kit

I took the vectrix out for a test-ride. It's quite a machine... plenty of acceleration, 80-100 miles per charge, integrated charger that adapts to how many amps are given to it, regenerative braking, easy back-up, and decent looks. For $11,000 it's pretty reasonably priced, considering what it is. However, I'm not rich enough to buy one just to "make a statement". My existing motorcycle cost me $4000, goes way faster, and takes 5 minutes to "recharge" at any gas station. I look forward to the day when electric vehicles are as cheap as their electric counterparts....
