Look out Tesla, here comes the Volkswagen Viseo!

This one probably won't show up on the road anytime soon but it's an interesting concept nonetheless. Created by German design student Marc Kirsch for his diploma project, this three-seater called Viseo provides an interesting idea for what could be done with an electric sports car. Kirsch worked with designers at Volkswagen to produce this novel looking coupe. One advantage to the lack of an exhaust system is the detachable suitcase embedded in the back end of the car. It's a computer-generated fantasy. I don't see anything for Tesla to worry about just yet. I do see one somewhat nifty idea, though. . . They've put an aerodynamic fairing over the rear wheels, but made it transparent. One complaint about the EV1 and Insight was that their wheel covers looked nerdy. The bad side of a transparent cover is, try to imagine keeping it clean!

I would think that sports car owners would be hard pressed to use this suitcase in fear that the finish would be damaged.

Wow, that car is really...
ugly.
I like it somewhat but the way the back wheels come out of the car and the rear view is just bad.
Plus, a suitcase in the back of the car... Has this guy ever got out the class room and actually taken a road trip? Does he have any idea how dirty the rear end and underneath of the car gets? Plus as the previous poster states, who is going to risk scratching their paint by using the back of the car as a suitcase?

The world doesn't need masturbatory objects d'art. It needs practical everyday cars.

Yeah, you guys are right. Who cares about interesting boundary pushing design. The best cars are designed in focus groups and by committee anyway.

Ouch, Dave.
Don't tell me you think Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini are on to something.

Is that supposed to be some kind of defense of this design? Just looking at it and you can see the obvious practical issues this "boundary pushing design" creates. You can't even open the doors because of the plastic layer on top!
Back in the 1950s maybe you could excuse stuff like this on the basis of naive experimentation. Not 50 years hence. Cars bodies look the way they do now because they have been time tested over 100 years of evolution. If you try something new, odds are the reason it hasn't been done is because it just doesn't work!
So you wind up with these one-off sculptures like these which are nothing but a waste of R&D money that could be put to better use solving growing problems with the sustainability of personal transportation.
