Euro-spec Ford Focus diesel rated at 42 mpg!

When Ford redesigned U.S.-spec Focus, they dumped the hatchback and wagon models and gave the sedan and new coupe a style that almost no one thought was an improvement. Fortunately for European drivers, the refreshed Euro Focus came out much better. At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September Ford added new front and rear styling in keeping with the Kinetic design of other new Euro-Fords. One more thing the Euro-Focus gets that ours doesn't is a diesel engine, specifically a 2.0L turbo four with 134 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. The Focus TDCi consumes miles at the rate of 42 for every US-sized gallon of diesel fuel. That's quite a few more than a gas-engined U.S. Focus which only gets 28 mpg combined. Come on Ford, we want a small diesel! Check out what CAR thought of the Focus diesel at the Read link.

I wonder if the new Euro-Spec Focus Convertible has an available diesel? Oh boy...what a combination! Excellent mileage AND a drop-top to boot. C'mon Ford...lets get these NICE models to America!

I like the restyle of this most recent focus, and also this looks better than a jetta, but i hate those wheels in the photo above, they look way to small and just a horrid design.

There is also the 1.6l engine that is very popular in fleets. In its 90hp version it gets 52mpg, getting 55 on those autobahns that are limited to 120km/h (75mph) is not a big deal with this small engine.

There is also the Focus EcoNetic with the 1.6 TDCI, aerodynamic tweaks and a 55 mpg US rating.
And a 60 mpg Jetta doesn't exist, not even in Europe.

Hello from Ireland,
I have had as company cars vw golfs 1.9 tdi 110hp and 90hp and a ford focus 1.6 tdci 90 hp and 110hp, the fords gave better mpg, I did a fair bit of city driving the golfs never bettered 37mpg USA (I was only 22 and driving slow was not a priority) the focus managed 43.3 US MPG, i NOW LIVE IN THE COUNTRY and 50mpg usa seems to be the figure. By the way I will be getting a mondeo 1.8 tdci 125hp in jan and i believe 41mpg usa is about what they are doing in the countryside.

@mattypape, The reason you don't like the wheels is most likely because you're American and think every car needs to have those ridiculous cartoonish 40" wheels with spinners on them. Some of those are absolutely horrible. As for the wheels one this one, there's nothing wrong with them. Having them a little bigger might improve the look slightly but not too much.

The wheels look the same as I am getting on my new mondeo. They do suit the mondeo better, and they are 16" any bigger then that tends to have a negative effect on ride with only a very marginal improvement in road holding, in fact on a undulating broken surface the handling disimproves because the car is to skitish, also the tyres are very expensive to replace if you go to big and both tyre and wheel will be very prone to damage.

So, the US and Ford could have a nice solution to fuel economy. Why don't we get these cars? Would they make SUV gas mileage look SICK?
Why do the Euro's get all the good cars?

Because the Big 3 want you to buy BIG vehicles which cost about the same as a car to build but sell for much more!!! (labor and materials cost is about the same for a big SUV and a car I've read).
I'll stick with my VW Carbio/Honda CR-V/'65 Beetle/ etc/etc. All have HUGE miles on them and are well cared for.

I rented a Ford Focus sta-wgn diesel in May. Drove from southern Germany to northern Germany and avgd 55+ gph at circa 85-90 mph on the autobahn.
The fact that this vehicle is not available in America is evidence of the collusion between American auto manufacturers and the Oil Polution Empire (read, American politicians and their lobbying buddies, who get free rides to lunch in gas-sucking Lincoln Town Cars, Crown Vics, et al.)
