If the Nissan Titan lives on, it might get a diesel

At the introduction of the Nissan Forum concept, VP of Product Planning Larry Dominique talked about diesels beyond the 3.0L V-6 being developed for the Maxima. If the slow-selling Titan pickup truck survives into the next decade, Nissan wants a diesel engine to put in it. By that time, all of the domestic truck makers will have new clean diesel engines in their light-duty pickup trucks. Even Toyota has a new 4.5L diesel V-8 in foreign market versions of their new Land Cruiser that could be adapted to the Tundra. That leaves Nissan looking for a partner. They had been negotiating with International Truck, who currently supply diesels to Ford for their Super Duty pickups. However, those talks have apparently not panned out. According to Dominique, Nissan is still trying to find the right partner.

After they bailed on International, they'll have a hard time finding anyone who wants to play with them. VM has a 640 DOHC (4l V6) they were trying to sell, but they had a tough time with emissions. Cat isn't even close to building an engine that will fit. Cummins could supply a V6 or V8, if their contract with Chrysler allows it. They could try to fit the 4.2L I6 from the Patrol, but that thing is so ancient, its being phased out.

Common Cummins! What a great truck it would be with a 4.5L cummins...I bet it would get nearly 30mpg and have 450-500 ft lbs. That's what Chevy is claiming a 1500 will get with it's upcomming 4.5L diesel.
I own an Armada and I have to say I'm thrilled with Nissan's 5.6L V8. It's the most powerful and responsive gas engine I've ever experienced. I love it...it puts the 03 Expedition with the 5.4L to shame which I owned previously...that thing felt like a 4cyl engine in comparison. And in Utah where diesel is consistantly $.30-$.50 more than gas, diesel just doesn't make sense. It's too bad Nissan is having a hard time selling the Titan, it's a really great truck.
