Chrysler builds first pilot production Durango Two-Mode Hybrids
While General Motors has been getting most of the attention of late winning awards for the Tahoe/Yukon Two-Mode hybrid SUVs and introducing the Two-Mode Saturn Vue, their development partners on the program have been cranking away as well. Chrysler first showed prototypes of their upcoming Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen Two-Modes last June and they built their first pilot production units at the Newark Delaware assembly plant just before the holidays. The vehicles were built from components made on production tooling with the production processes. Apparently everything went well and Chrysler is on track to launch their first hybrids later this year. It's still not known exactly when the other two partners, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, will launch production of their two-mode hybrids although they did show concepts at last fall's Frankfurt Motor Show.
