Zap will give new buyers a year's worth of free electricity

Well, once you have your "made for iPod" Zap car, you'll see an increase in your electric bill, right? Not if you buy a Zap Xebra sedan or pickup ordered in the next month or so. For new Xebra buyers, Zap will throw in a free Kill-A-Watt Smart Power Meter and will cover your electricity costs for one year. According to the National Post, this "preemptive action" could quiet drivers concerns about high gas prices, at least those who opt for a Xebra. You can read more, direct from Zap, here.
To qualify for the freebies, you need to order your Xebra before Valentine's Day (Feb.14). How lovely.

There are tons of government incentives to buy an electric or alternative vehicle. I'm thinking about purchasing one myself this year after I get back money on my taxes.

Does anyone know the incentives for the state of California? I heard Zap say something about being able to use carpooling lanes once. Is that really true? That'd be awesome to WHIZZ ON by during hideous commute traffic in LA!

IF it hasn't been covered here before here a tip Texas will give you $3500 to get rid of your old car and get a hybrid, of course you have to qualify. but it helps you get into a new hybrid.

They have to BRIBE you to get into these "penalty vehicles" as the Aptera CEO calls them.

I might more seriously consider a Zap if they had a dealership anywhere near me. I contacted Zap directly (their on-line dealer location info stinks), and discovered that the nearest location is about 250 miles away (would I need to get a truck and trailer to get it serviced?).
In any case, this isn't really news: Most EVs only use on the order of 2 to 3 cents of electricity per mile. A low-range EV won't rack up miles the way long-haul commuters can. Battery cost per mile, on the other hand, can be 10 to 20 times the electrcity cost, depending on the vehicle and lots of other variables.

I have a suggestion for ZAP (the folks who tried to peddle the $25,000 to $28,000 - 60 MPG smart car) to TRY to sell this God awful piece of junk. Instead of free electricity, they should give the purcahser a full suit of body armor and a crash helmet. You probably would only need one set because I can't imagine that many friends would want to take a chance riding with you in this death trap.

Oh come on guys, you're all acting like this thing is a death trap. Well...it is but no more so than a motor cycle. And I'll bet some of you that said that actually ride one. Let me give you a little background, I'm an avid drag racer and classic car collector. My old cars are big...the biggest of the big cars and my racecar is fast and needs to be hauled to the track in a trailer. So I'm not comfortable in a small vehical. But the day has been coming. When the environmentalists start whining, stuff happens. And this is the stuff. It's the only way you are going to go green. Hybrids use gasoline to recharge the bateries so it's not completely green. An electric car is completely green but only if you're home is fed from a wind generator or by a nuklear power plant. Other wise the electricty is generated by burning coal or oil. So, how green do you want to be? Here's an idea, buy a deisel powered vehical and run it on biodiesel. No harmful emisions and it's made from used vegatable oil. Biodiesl's cost is a lttle higher than petrol diesel but it's worth it to save the planet right? No, not for me, I made it in my garage for 85 cents a gallon. As green as you can get there buddy.
Good luck all
