Detroit 2008 Preview: Video of the Audi R8 V12 TDI, 737lb-ft and 23 MPG!

A Video has now leaked out of Audi's new monster diesel concept that's going to be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in just a few days. Audi is taking the 5.5L TDI V-12 they had in Q7 TDI concept at last year's show and stuffing it into the rear end of the R8 sports car. That's a combination that can yield a 0-60mph time of 4.2 seconds with a 186mph top speed on the Autobahn while steel achieving an average of the 23mpg on the EU test cycle. This 500hp, 737lb-ft monster is unlikely to ever make it to the end of an assembly line - especially with the pending EU CO2 regulations and US CAFE standards - but it's still interesting to ponder the possibilities of what a diesel engine can do. Check the studio video after the jump.

No, is it supposed to mean that the automakers can make engines that get much better mileage thanthey are selling to us now. Just like the new 620HP+ Corvette ZR1. It is supposed to be getting 25-30 MPG.
So if GM and Audi can get that kind of mileage out of a 6.0 L or a V-12, just apply that technology to a 3.0L or a V-6. They should be able to see significant increases in mileage while still maintain reasonable performance without selling us a Tata.

The fuel-economy and the performance is very impressive. :)
Of course, it is to be expected of when it costs so much. If the car is equipped with Bluetec or something (which I'd imagine it would be if it is going to be released in the U.S.) it would become the "Tesla Roadster" of Diesels.
On a side note, seeing the car in the computer really makes the car's porportions look a little awkward. But if you see the car, especially at night, nothing will catch your eye like this. IMO, it's much more striking and beautiful than any Ferrari or Lamborghni.

Well, Audi did try to sell very economic cars. The 1995 Audi Duo was the first hybrid to be mass-produced. But nobody really wanted it. The A2 was the only comfortable fast four-door car which consumed less than 3 liters of diesel in 100 km but it was Audis biggest economical flop. On the other hand the small diesels and the small TFSI-engines today are quite economical. My fathers 1.9 TDI A6 consumes about 6 liters in 100 km and is really fast.
But this is just a concept to show how effictive and sporty an audi diesel can be. The new diesel technologie from the V12-Diesel will be introduced top-down to other diesel motors. Furthermore the VW/Audi/Porsche parallel-hybrid-system could be used with a diesel engine, too.
