Nissan Carwings telematics system gets environmental award in Japan

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in Japan has selected Nissan to get the 18th annual Energy Conservation Prize Director-General's award. The award is for Nissan's CarWings telematics system and its contribution to fuel savings. The navigation system that is part of CarWings access to real-time traffic information and a historical database of information about traffic patterns to compute the most fuel-efficient route to a destination. The system helps achieve shorter commuts at a higher average speed with with few changes in speed that require fuel consuming acceleration. So far CarWings is only available in Japan, but hopefully Nissan will bring it to other markets soon and other manufacturers will add the same functionality to their systems.

I've always thought it would be beneficial if the navigation system in the Prius had information on traffic lights and hills and things so it could optimize the usage of the battery pack for certain areas based on your route. I suspect such a technology is somewhat far away, and if we move to electric drive with a range extender like the Volt then such a system would become much less useful.
