GM's Bob Lutz: Global warming is a "total crock of sh*t"

According to D Magazine, at a private lunch, GM chairman Maximum Bob Lutz said global warming is a "total crock of shit." Bob adds "I'm a skeptic, not a denier. Having said that, my opinion doesn't matter." Speaking about the battery-driven Volt, Lutz said, "I'm motivated more by the desire to replace imported oil than by the CO₂ [argument]." At the lunch Bob also said hybrids like the Prius make "make no economic sense" and the Volt is exciting for him because "it's the last thing anybody expected from GM." Don't hold back Bob, tell us what you really think.

UPDATE: Lutz doesn't back down.

Yeah, why do anything to protect against any naturally occuring force, like forest fires or floods? Or natural market forces that result in people shunning Detroit-based cars for that matter.

"Man-made" global warming is a total crock of crap. It's the latest incarnation of a pseudo-religion for the non-believers of a Biblical God. It's all about money, control and power. Anytime politicians latch on to an issue BEWARE!

I thought all life on earth was carbon based-so what happens when it dies-maybe it contributes to green house gasses? How about volcanoes-how much greenhouse gasses do they produce? Is it possible that our decaying orbit around the sun could contribute to the earth warming a little bit? Come on people is it possible that the earth goes through natural heating and cooling cycles and we can no more control it than the molten radioactive core of this planet!!! I take it all back-we could set off a bunch of nukes and cool the earth off with the resulting nuclear winter but than again we would not be around long enough to see it work!! LOL

Lutz is a clever salesman. He is setting a defiant tone to maintain the GM customer base. He will make good decisions for GM but if you were smart enough to read 'On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors: John Z. DeLorean's Look Inside the Automotive Giant', you would realize that the company deserved no bailout, no pity. Should of let GM burn, use the money to buy the factories and build better cars without the unions. What is 'Fisker' doing with the Karma? A brand new company that nobody talks about......This world is a fixed joke.

i live next to a river where the village opposite always flooded this was 1970 ish yet i have not seen a flood in the last 10 +years so if global warming is happening should there be more flooding oh now we have had the worst/coolest summer i can remember( i'm 48 and)they now say climate CHANGE well that has happened from the year dot. if you replace the words climate change/global warming with the words 'we want to tax you more 'then you will be closer to the mark and according to my primary school teacher we should now be in an ice age. trust me the experts told her

It would definitely be to all of our best interests if the product development department of GM would actually take between $500,000,000 and $1 Billion dollars to modify the current engines used in all the vehicles to be hybrid with similar systems to the Toyota Prius and/or utilize the incredible and high performance electric technology from Tesla Motors to be mixed into Hybrids. I don't see why that can't be done ASAP, especially with the gas prices!!!

In addition to my above comment:
1) To avoid any misunderstanding: the problem of the "no economic sense making" PRIUS [ref: Bob Lutz] is not the type of battery used (NiMH). It's the "underpowering" of this HEV, i.e. only 1.8 kWh are installed used at a DOD [depth of discharge] of 40% resulting in 725 Wh. At least 5 times more energy would be required. Using Li-ion batteries would be cost-prohibitive since a cost factor of 4 compared to NiMH must be applied: total cost roughly 18'000 USD for a 9 kWh battery.

2) I am surprised how little tolerance many bloggers show if somebody has a different opinion from the so called public & scientific opinion. Currently, most statements on the Global Warming are based on rather short term observations and predictions. Remind the predictions 10 years ago on the forest death issue!!!

Bob Lutz' comment on the Toyota Prius is correct. With an approx. low 10 km full electric driving range that's really a very weak hybrid but most drivers don't notice it because of the flexible battery recharging system. The imports of this car to Europe are rather small (only 16% of total). This is not only due to the well implanted diesel engine cars but also to this unsufficient electric driving range.- This comment comes from the inventor of the NiMH system (conceived 1967 at the Battelle R&D Center in Geneva /CH) which is used on the Prius.
