Segway replaces wheelchair for some

Dr. Peter D. Poullos, a resident physician in the radiology department at Stanford University, was seriously injured in a bicycling accident. Paralyzed from the shoulders down, he had to go through major therapy to regain the use of his arms and legs, but was never completely able to recover. Unfortunately, his condition is not at all uncommon, and he, like countless others, was forced into using a wheelchair under certain conditions. Until he got his Segway, that is.

Although incessently mocked and made fun of, the Segway provides Dr. Poullos with greater mobility than a wheelchair can, and according to the San Francisco Chronicle, he feels less handicapped because of those capabilities. While some people commented that they loved his machine, others went so far as to try and push him off of it. While he has had issues to overcome, it is nice to see that the Segway can truly be an alternative for handicapped persons.
