The latest version of the VW Passat-derived Škoda Superb is making its official debut in Geneva this week, and the Czech marque's flagship will also be offered in the eco-themed GreenLine trim. Many of Volkswagen's BlueMotion lessions are applied here, meaning a redesigned, more aerodynamic fascia, lowered ride height, reduced weight, taller gearing and an efficient engine underhood. In the case of the Superb GreenLine, power is derived from a 1.9L TDI PD DPF with a diesel particulate filter good for 103-horses and around 184 lb-ft of torque. End result? 46 U.S. mpg (5.1 l / 100 km) in the combined cycle and carbon dioxide emissions of 136 g/km. And no, we don't think you need to take the giant leaf graphic as part of the deal.

I hope they let Skoda upgrade this to the VW's new 2.0L common-rail diesel, currently available only in the Tiguan or else, an Audi TDi. The old 1.9L PD (unit injector) design is cheaper but also generates a lot more NVH, which is a problem in a top-of-the-line model.
Moreover, a start-stop feature should be added to the GreenLine package.

It is impossible to compare the 1.9 PD with the 2.0 because this last kind of engines are much powerful than the "refurbished" 1.9L with only 77Kw, so it is normal the reduction of CO2 emissions and consumption
Your comment it is not entirely true - Cars with 1.9 engines are cheaper because are not so well equiped with extras - The production of 2.0L engines are $100 cheaper than the older ones.
WV will discontinue the 1.9L for a 1.6L common-rail in 2009. Although the fuel consumption stills the same, CO2 values will be lower - Just to satisfy the new regulations.
A start-stop feature will a interesting option in a near future, but the final price will rise I guess - All the new BMWs are equiped with this feature but it is a premium brand.
In my point of view the clients of WV, Audi and Skoda will be missing the old and reliable 1.9L PD, capable of good performance and economy - The 1.9 engine remains the best seller in WV nowadays.
