San Francisco mayor signs alt-fuel taxi legislation

In 2006, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom called for the entire taxi fleet of the city to be replaced by alternative fuel vehicles. At that time roughly fifteen percent of the fleet consisted of hybrid and natural gas fueled-vehicles. Last week the Board of Supervisors approved legislation that would allow city taxi companies to charge new fees to help pay for alternative fuel cabs and the mayor has signed it into law. By 2011 the entire fleet is expected to have turned over and the law requires cab companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by twenty percent by 2012.
