HGTV giving away Yukon Hybrid to winner of their Green Home Giveaway
HGTV is in a giving mood these days. The cable channel hasn't even given away their 2008 Dream Home yet and they are already working on their next giveaway. Oh yeah, each of these house giveaways is also sponsored by GMC and the winners of the homes will also get the keys to a brand new GMC Yukon Hybrid. While some remain skeptical regarding the green credentials of the Yukon Hybrid, we think that the vehicle is just fine. Considering the 40 percent improvement in city mileage along with a 25 percent improvement in highway mileage in a vehicle still capable of towing 6,000 pounds, the Yukon Hybrid will be saving lots of gas for the families that can afford it. Of course, affording it is made significantly easier when it's won - the winner will pay only the taxes. Oh yeah, a house is included too, one that is supposed to be green.

How can a vehicle with only a T2B5 emission rating be considered green?

Because nothing says "Green" like a giant SUV that gets 20mpg.

why not the LS2/LS7? 11:57AM (3/14/2008)
Unless it goes to a family of 8, this is another environmental disaster.

Diesels only make Tier 2 Bin 5 and you see them lauded on here all the time. At least this is better than Diesel trucks which are Tier 2 Bin 10 I guess.

For those who do actually need to seat their whole families and who regularly tow (granted, there are relatively few out there, but there are some), the Yukon Hybrid is definitely an improvement over the standard Yukon.

The reason diesel (and ethanol) gets lauded as green is because a lot of people equate "Green" with "Fuel Economy" and "Emissions" with "Carbon Dioxide". It's the like the global warming debate (or rather, "Climate Change" versus "Global Warming").
Information is simplified for general consumption to the point of being technically inaccurate.
The other problem is that people don't think about net environmental impact. A real green home wouldn't be out in the suburbs; it'd be a condo in a large city very near public transportation. A green car would be a car you never need to drive.

This home is appropriately paired with the two-mode hybrid Tahoe.
While it achieves a gold certification through the LEED program guidelines, like the Tahoe, it could go further in regards to a "green" initiative (like a LEED platinum rating, or *gasp* even going beyond LEED guidelines).
As part of a commercially sponsored program (where sponsors provide mostly new materials and products at a discount for publicity) you're not going to see the most exciting/greenest, means and methods. The Green Home Giveaway (and the lower end of the LEED program's certification rankings) is aimed at making "green" a viable marketing concept for consumers.
Not as hardcore as I prefer, but it's still an exciting project, and I'd gladly accept the prize (whose liquidated assets could fund something more to my taste).

I'd gladly take one...
...to sell to allow me to get something more suited to my needs. (and fun)
