New York 2008: Subaru R1e on the stand

click to enlarge and see our high-resolution gallery.
The all-electric Subaru R1e will be seen on the streets of New York City more and more in the coming months, thanks to the expansion of a testing program that now includes the New York Power Authority (NYPA). The NYPA will be getting two of these very nice-looking vehicles to test, similar to what's being done in Japan. How do we know they're nice looking? Well, the galleries from Geneva were one way, but now we've seen it in the metal, and we are impressed. Very. This car should be made available, and soon.

To bad Subaru abandoned this grill. It looks good on this car and better than the grills on thier other models. They could use a nice small car like this under the Imprezza because the Imprezza costs as much as cars that are much larger.

What, exactly, does an EV need a big grill like that for? Just to create extra drag? It's not like it needs air for an internal combustion engine -- just a little for cooling.

The R1 isn't a purpose build EV. The R1 has been around for several years in Japan, they just converted it over. THat's why it retains the grill. They could change it over, but that would just add cost to a limited run of vehicles.

+1 to the schnoz. Would like to pick up a 2007 WRX, partially for that reason. That and the engine...

That schnozzelle (half schnozz, half nacelle) fairly screams, "our target demographic never heard of the Edsel."
