Drive a hydrogen car for free in Sacramento tomorrow
Any future version of the "hydrogen economy," if such a thing ever exists at all, will require massive amounts of technology which has either not yet been invented or needs much more refinement. If you are interested in knowing more about these upcoming technologies, including hydrogen-powered cars, maybe you should check out the 2008 Hydrogen Expo in Sacramento, California. The event started today and will continue through April first (Tuesday). Besides seeing exciting technology such as a fuel cell powered blender and a cybercafe running on fuel cell power, you might be able to drive one of fifteen available hydrogen powered cars. If you're in the area, this event may be worth checking out to see in person some of the cool concept vehicles that you read about on these very pages. Feel free to send us some pictures if you go.[Source: 2008 Hydrogen Expo]
Live Demos With Hydrogen, New Fuel Cell Products
90 Exhibitors from 11 Countries at the NHA Conference & Hydrogen Expo
SACRAMENTO, California, March 26 -- Near-to-market
products are the focus of the upcoming Hydrogen Expo US, held with the
National Hydrogen Association's (NHA) Annual Conference, on March 30 -
April 1 at the Sacramento Convention Center. Expo attendees will have the
chance to see real-life applications of hydrogen technologies and to drive
one of 15 hydrogen vehicles. On Monday, March 31, admission to Hydrogen
Expo and participation in the Ride & Drive are free to the public.
Ninety exhibitors from eleven countries will show the latest in
hydrogen and fuel cell developments at the 2008 Hydrogen Expo. Live
demonstrations of the technology include a fuel cell powered blender, a
cybercafe running on fuel cell power, and hydrogen gas leak detection
equipment. Three special interest pavilions in the exhibit hall will
feature hydrogen generation from renewables and nuclear energy, and
technology "Made in Germany". At the Exhibitor Forum attendees will learn
more about available products, regional and international hydrogen
initiatives.
New products featured at Hydrogen Expo US include fuel cells
manufactured by Altergy and Plug Power; a hydrogen generation module from
Proton Energy Systems; hydrogen storage vessels from Cryofab; hydrogen leak
detection equipment from H2Scan and RKI Instruments; and many more.

Some of the things you won't see mentioned there:
The high cost of H2 storage.
The extremely high cost of H2 fuel cells.
The poor efficiency, short range, and high operating cost of H2 ICE vehicles.
Comparing the efficiency of battery electric cars to H2 cars.
The potential for ozone damage from leaking hydrogen.
The hydrogen hype continues...

Those that watched "Who Killed The Electric Car" will understand that H2 research was created by the auto and the oil industries as a red herring to deflect federal funding from being used to develop battery electric cars. H2 is way out in the future if at all. The best path now is to develop and produce electric cars and not ineffecient ICEs. And, we should fund and support the battery car with all hast using federal funding so the BEVs can help end out dependency on foreign oil. Of course the only way to hurry up the process in for the oil friendly duet of Bush and Cheney to vacate the White House early.

Ah, but H2 is the PERFECT fuel... for people who can freely spend other people's money.

Why there is no pure battery electric car with an inboard small gasoline battery recharger? They sell gasoline generator at 150$ at walmart. It add
100 pounds of weight to the car compared to 400-600 pounds for the battery itself. It can stretch the autonomy to 500 miles instead of the typical 100-150 miles. I will not feel secure if my car need to be stopped 4-6 hours after each 150 miles.
On short trip the generator never kick in but on vacation or special trips it can get me farther. On cold days too it can maintain the battery in top shape. I think it's the gm volt principle but the ice engine don't need to be big. i think a single cylinder engine spinning at 5000 rpm in hcci combustion mode is very efficient, 15 to 20 h.p is good and useful. It's ridiculous to go to 100% gasoline to 100% battery. A mix of the good quality of both technologies is the best.

Yup as usual there is alot of information not posted and people don't realize that the cost of new fuels at this point comes at a heavy price. That is why we are gradually going towards alternative fuels . We simply cant provide the demand and it is to inneficcent at this point. I also agree with A.Brien. Eventually people will catch on

As Chris M says, the cost of H2 Fuel cells is high and so is the cost of the hydrolysers that produce H2. But a company called ITM-Power are about to go into production making hydrolysers and fuel cells at a fraction of the current cost.

There are some thechnologies lately that promise the ability to make H2 cars a reachable reality!:
for example the production of Hydrogen inside a car by means of common metals such as Aluminum and Magnesium, to make hydrogen car.
or the iseas of ITM Power
Eventualy, the technology will be found, after all, Hydrogen is the most common element in nature.
