Allentown, PA "America on Wheels" museum to open, includes an EV1
One defining characteristic of Americans is our incessant movement in personal vehicles of all sorts. From the Conestoga Wagons that crossed the continent to Hummers that take (some of) us down the block to buy a quart of milk, our love affair with vehicles remains undiminished. And museums large and small devoted to transport dot the landscape, necessitating further travel to visit them. The latest is the $17 million, 48,000-square-foot "America on Wheels," opening April 12 in Allentown, PA. With displays including two-wheelers to semi-trailers, it intends to be a comprehensive exhibit. Mack Truck is sponsoring a virtual reality experience, to allow the kids to enjoy the thrill of driving a semi across a construction site. Of special note to ABG readers, there is a "Car of the Future" exhibit featuring a 1997 General Motors EV1. Because GM needlessly destroyed the ability of these racy cars to drive before a few were donated to museums such as "America on Wheels," perhaps GM ought to sponsor an EV1 virtual reality experience. With any luck, within a few short years, an electric "reality experience" will return to showrooms.

Drive down the block to buy a quart of milk? People in my neighborhood load the kids in the SUV and drive them to the end of the driveway to catch the school bus in the morning. They also keep the kids in the SUV, with the motor running, until the school bus arrives. The school bus stops, picks up the kids, then goes to the very next house, and stops again.
I suppose people think they might die or somthing if they had to walk more than five or six steps on their own.

Anyway, cool museum. It's within a Tesla's range from my house. Might make a cool roadtrip sometime.

And here I thought I was the only one in Allentown that reads ABG.
I expect there'll be more news out of Allentown in the future what with Air Products building a hydrogen refueling station...and a Ford hydrogen powered bus coming to a local organization.

I got a sneak preview of the America on Wheels museum. Wow! They did a great job, especially with all the obstacles thrown at them over the years just getting it built. The museum staff and volunteers made a heroic effort to make this a meaningful interactive display of vehicles. I especially liked the lawnmower racers and the vintage Mack firetruck.
This will be a great beginning or end point for cruises or rallys from Allentown to Hershey's AACA Museum.
