Regional government wants companies to switch to electric bikes

The Region of Cantabria, Spain, has announced a plan for companies to switch from gasoline motorbikes to electric units. The plan, called BioBike, is aimed to business which use motorbikes for pizza, courier and postal deliveries as well as police patrols. The Government will give tax exemptions as well as direct subsidies for purchase of electric motorbikes. No word on conversions.
According to Cantabria, a company can substitute a 50cc moped for a 1.5 kW electric unit, a 80cc bike for 2.5 kW electric, and large 400cc units by 20kW motors. Range usually varies between 60 and 150 km, which is plenty since these vehicles perform errands in a range of less than 100 km per day in urban settings, and can be recharged in four to six hours. I'll give them a hint: help these guys.

I'm sure Vetrix is glad to hear about this proposal and I can agree with tax exemptions and tax credits, but direct subsidies are simply Socialist larceny and redistribution.

pity that there are so few decent options aside from Vectrix, and even Vectrix has its problems ( see Vis for Voltage forums under large scooters & cycles )
Some chinese scooter makers seem to be getting their quality issues sorted through newer product iterations, but the choices are still slim.

This is rather like the plan New Delhi has to offer subsidies for the purchase of Electric Cars. Governments are getting in on the EV revolution.

Thanks for that great link Kert. I was at that show and can confirm it was every bit as exciting as described - electric vehicles everywhere! Serious ones, being sold to serious fleet managers. Not just concept cars or publicity gimmicks - this was a serious trade show. Last year there were just two EV makers there - Modec and Smith. This year I counted nine. It looks like the concept is now proven and makers are joining in as fast as they can to catch this huge market that has opened up in the past year.
