BMW twin-turbo 2.0L diesel wins Best New Engine of 2008
Another of the honorees in this year's International Engine of the Year competition is BMW's latest diesel engine. The dual turbo 2.0L four cylinder that debuted in the 123d this year was selected by the 65 member jury as the Best New Engine for 2008. This new engine provides exceptional power for a 2.0L diesel and excellent fuel economy. The 123d is rated at 204hp while achieving 45mpg on the EU driving cycle and emitting only 138g/km of CO2. The engine uses a pair of turbochargers of different sizes to provide quick low end response and plenty of top end power. Features like an aluminum block have helped cut 38lbs from the weight of the engine compared to BMW's older four cylinder diesel. The performance and emissions of this engine are also enhanced by a third-generation common rail fuel injection system and particulate filter.

I hate this engine a lot because it reminds me of how little choice we have here in the US for a nice oil burner mill.

It is a shame that BMW won't sell this engine in the United States because they are afraid it will hurt their uppity exclusive image if they sell a practical 4-cyl engine.
With all the talk about suspending gas taxes, and other lame "solutions" that will do nothing to help folks at the pump, why aren't politicians doing something to get cars like this sold here RIGHT NOW!
Name almost any car manufacturer, and I can list a number of models that they sell in other places in the world, that get much better MPG than what they sell here in the US.
Re-inventing the car to run on batteries/hydrogen/etc is great for the future (2010 and beyond). But right here today we could have much more fuel efficient cars for sale if Congress jumped in and helped/pushed car makers to sell here in the US, their most fuel efficient cars they produce for the rest of the world.

No, the fact that BMW added a second turbocharger & plumbing that adds 20lbs is not something to overlook.

I believe that a twin turbo 2.0liter diesel, with the right transmission, would convince people of the viability of diesel. Yes, many Americans love the seat of your pants feeling you get from stepping on the go-pedal. Diesel power plants are great at amplifying this feeling. With prices where they are now, even people who drive $50k+ cars are wincing in pain at the pump.
The timing is right for a full-on invasion of diesels. Everything is in place for them to succeed, the manufacturers just need to sell them to the public.

Maybe BMW will not bring the engine to the US, but why couldn't they use it in their upcoming Mini SUV???
