Toyota adds diesel engine to the Auris lineup
The Toyota Auris, the compact 5-door hatchback set to compete in the most difficult European segment is now available with a new diesel powertrain. The unit is a 1.4-liter D-4D 90 engine, with 89bhp (90 DIN hp) at 3,800rpm and maximum torque of 190 Nm (140 lb-ft), which can be ordered with a 5-speed manual or MultiMode transmission (with fully automatic or manual sequential modes).
Official combined cycle fuel consumption is 56.5mpg UK (46 mpg U. S. or 5.0 l/100 km) and average CO2 emissions of 132g/km. Top speed is 109mph and the 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) acceleration figure in 12.0 seconds (14.7 with MultiMode transmission).

Call me crazy, but 46 mpg (5l/100 km) for a tiny car equipped with a tiny diesel engine...really isn't that great.
For these dimensions and for that engine, it should get 60 mpg, no less than that.

132g/km?
That means it'll turn a 36mpg US combined figure.
That's not bad, but doesn't seem so hot for such a small car, especially with a Diesel. I can get 29 in a Cobalt XFE, which is a much bigger car and it runs on regular gas, which is cheaper.

Its on the same platform as the Corolla.
So comparison to the Cobalt XFE is appropriate.

tankd0g is right. This car isn't as small as I thought. Because of its looks I thought it was Yaris sized (or even Aygo). So it's roughly the same size as a Cobalt.
I still find the fuel economy figures disappointing. With a motor of that power, and a Diesel, it should do better.

Toyota should be ashamed of the fuel consumption!
56 UK mpg and 132 g/km CO2 is poor for a diesel this size, especially given that it only has a 90 horse power engine and takes a full 12 secs to 60 mph.
For comparison, the similarly sized Citroen C4 1.6 HDi with 110 horses acheives 62.8 UK mpg (4.5 l / 100 km) on the combined cycle, and hits 60 mph 0.8 seconds sooner.
BMW manage 60.1 UK mpg from the much larger 3 series, with sub 10 second 0-60 mph performance.
It seems the company that gave us the Prius isn't too clever when it comes to fuel sipping diesels.
