John McCain flip-flops on state level CO2 regulation

While Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain was visiting the GM Technical Center in Warren MI on Friday he reversed direction on carbon dioxide regulation. During a June campaign stop in Ohio, McCain declared that he favored national standards for carbon dioxide regulation. While McCain was in Michigan he expressed support for state level rules to limit emissions. While there is nothing wrong in general with with learning new information and adjusting a position on an issue, Republican campaigners have a history of criticizing opponents for doing precisely that including in a new ad that was revealed the same day. An aide to McCain later tried to say that McCain only supported state level standards until a federal cap and trade system for emissions credits was in place. If McCain really supports the limits that California and other states are trying to impose than he should be doing his job in the senate and introducing a similar federal standard.

Reading this I got the distinct impression he was speaking of establishing a national standard while reserving the right of states to also impose stricter standers.
From that article: "McCain supports the ability of states to impose regulations until a national "cap and trade" program to limit carbon emissions, something McCain has proposed, is in place. Once carbon caps are established, the aide said, McCain would oppose state regulations."
That makes perfect sense to me.

California had a good reason for more severe pollution controls with respect to NOx, unburnt hydrocarbons, and the like - they gathered in the stagnant air around LA.
CO2 and global warming, otoh, is a global issue. There is no reason why it should be handled differently in CA than in any other state. We're all in this one together.

Wouldnt it be easier to just build some giant fans to blow the smog away instead of subjecting the entire country to the regulations needed in one city.
How about LA get some balls and ban all vehicles with IC engines and leave the rest of us alone.
Just thinking outside the box here.

@DJL
Very well put. I wish more people understood global warming, or "global climate change" as it should appropriately be called.
@Sam... this post is clearly biased, we know bloggers aren't journalists, per say, but at least try to behave like one.

Arizona Sen. John McCain said Wednesday he backs Arizona, California and other states in their efforts to impose new rules on emissions from automobile and other sources AS WELL AS federal regulations on greenhouse gases.
---
McCain said states should be able to decide their own environmental policies, including emissions and offshore drilling.

I was looking for AutoBlogGreen... but I seem to have found AutoBlogPink.
How about taking your Liberal (capital L) agenda and shoving it up your nether regions? You don't seem to be able to understand that you don't have to be Liberal (capital L) or Socialist (capital S) to have an interest in conservation.
"Republican campaigners have a history of criticizing opponents for doing precisely that"
Maybe that's because your Socialist darling is an empty suit that has reversed himself on absolutely every issue at least twice so far.
If you can't write about autos and conservation issues without injecting your Socialist agenda, how about going the hell away?

The US is a liberal country and this post echos the concerns of the vast majority of Americans today. Liberalism is now the mainstream. The neo-con right wing fringe had its chance and it drove America to the edge of ruin. So it's perfectly reasonable to question the policies and statements of the man who is running for Bush's third term. I, along with most of the world's citizens, are interested.
And you might not want to use "socialist" as a pejorative. Most of the "socialist" European countries are kicking America's tush when it comes to lifespan, vacation time, child mortality, social security, freedom of the press, lack of corruption, and economic performance.
And you might note that Al Gore received a Nobel prize, probably the greatest honor in the world. It is disgusting to see neo-cons disparage the great work he has done, given how much destruction and suffering they have wrought.

The US is a liberal country and this post echos the concerns of the vast majority of Americans today (Except that it America is conservative). Liberalism is now the mainstream (Except that its not). The neo-con right wing fringe had its chance and it drove America to the edge of ruin (If by edge of ruin you mean: America is still the greatest country in the world today). So it's perfectly reasonable to question the policies and statements of the man who is running for Bush's third term (Except most conservatives cannot stand McCain). I, along with most of the world's citizens, are interested (Clearly you have no idea what America is about, other than what you read through your liberal-stained glasses - which undoubtedly are "mainstream" liberal publications whose print subscriptions and profits are dropping faster than oil-prices are rising).
And you might not want to use "socialist" as a pejorative. Most of the "socialist" European countries are kicking America's tush when it comes to lifespan, vacation time (lazy), child mortality (are Euro's still having children?), social security, freedom of the press (sorry), lack of corruption (is that measurable?), and economic performance (sorry, when America sneezes...the world still catches a cold).

And you might note that Al Gore received a Nobel prize, probably the greatest honor in the world (You just painted yourself with that comment. Does anyone care about the Nobel other than liberals whose agenda is usually advanced?) It is disgusting to see neo-cons disparage the great work he has done, given how much destruction and suffering they have wrought. (Actually, its depressing to know that brainwashed people like you actually exist - I can only hope you can't vote in America).

gholland ,
Dog gone it, you told em! That's a real show of conservative brain power you put on there. "Except it's not", dang, your smart as a neo-con whip. Wanna be in my, I mean McCain's, cabinet?

@10 nom de plume - American is neither liberal or conservative, since past elections seem to indicate an almost even split. In fact, your liberal Democratically controlled Congress has a 9% approval rating as of last week - doesn't sound like the majority of Americans are in agreement with you.
The Europeans are ahead of us in many social areas, but that's because they can spend their money on social programs while we protect their "tush" from the worlds nasty elements.
