Loremo unveils definitive skin for its high-mpg model

Aspiring German automaker Loremo has unveiled the newest images of their production intent model. Although they're only 3D renderings, they already show what the production model should look like. After the initial prototypes, the car gets the definitive shape, which is slightly more conventional in shape than before but also offers more interior space for its occupants. The long tail is still there, kept for aerodynamic reasons to keep the drag coefficient at 0.20.
Regarding powertrains, we will find three available, and they even disclosed approximate prices:
- LS: 2-cyl turbo diesel, 20hp, 2 l/100 km (117mpg U. S.). 0-100 km/h (0-62mph) under 20s. Top speed 160 km/h (95mph) - €15,000
- GT: 3-cyl turbo diesel, 50hp, 3 l/100 km (78mpg U. S.). 0-100 km/h under 10s. Top speed 200 km/h (125mph) - €20,000
- EV: Lithium-ion batteries, 20 kW (25hp), 0-100 km/h under 15s. Top speed 170 km/h (105mph) - €30,000

- Isn't that a lot of battery 20kW?
- Isn't the Volt only 14kW?
That must account for the price.

kW does not equal kWh.
kW is power (like horsepower).
kWh refers to the battery capacity.
Notice the 20kW has a (25hp) quotation.
This is an interesting car, kind of like a four wheeler Aptera. Wish them luck.

You are confusing power (Kw) with energy (Kwh). The battery pack for the Volt stores 16 Kwh of energy, but the power rating is much higher, somewhere around 75 Kw peak power for short bursts of fast acceleration.
What puzzles me is why Loremo is using such an underpowered electric motor. A LiIon battery pack of sufficient size to give the range mentioned (95 miles) should have a peak power nearly three times the 20 Kw they have listed. Since electric motors retain high efficiency over a very wide power range, they could use a 40 to 50 Kw motor with no loss of efficiency and dramatically improved acceleration. Maybe Loremo doesn't want the EV version to outperform their "powerful" GT diesel model.

Too bad the economics of the EV doesn't cut it here.
The EV performance is similar to the euro15K diesel model. The saving on gas can't justify the euro15K premium.
If they had made the EV performance similar to the GT model the EV would have been a better value proposition. Still not close enough for my liking.
Of course we are looking at the "best in class" for ICE vehicle economy. To compete in this segment EV's have to work harder on the costing to make a fight of it.

Economics should not analyzed that way. A lot of customers would pay a premium not to burn foreign oil and pollute with diesel.

Yeah ... I'm agreed with you on that. People should want to pay a premium for a non-polluting car.
I'm just not so sure many people feel the same way.
That's why I'm keeping my analysis down to plain old dollars and cents... until I learn otherwise.

Mike the Volts battery pack is 14KWh This info here doesnt say if the engine is 20Kw in power or battery capacity
Now if bush didnt kill our economy we would of seen a EV for around 30 grand.
Then again bush killing our economy and pointless war has helped lead to higher oil prices which is finally encouraging change.

With the 25HP right behind it, it's pretty obvious they're talking about power, not capacity. It would have been very nice if they would have stated the capacity also. For 15.000 eur premium above the 2l diesel version I would expect a good operating radius.

My quick review:
I like the fact that it sips fuel better than anything on the road at least as advertised. I hope you can fit a bike in there.
0-60 in anything less than 12 seconds is the standard, anything slower is not acceptable. 15 is pushing it. So toss the small diesel model.
This car looks really small. I’m into downsizing cars to increase energy efficiency, but I would like to see more crumple zones. I wonder it if that is the 90 or 95 percentile male? They are going to have to crash test these and I dont think it going to be pretty.
If its diesel and they are trying to sell in the US they are going to have a cost problem meeting emissions.
I would like to test out the ingress/egress since it does not have regular doors.
Please put amber turn signals all around. Red flashers are not effective.
I would like to know who is going make those custom tires with there huge diameter, narrow width and extreme aspect ratio.
The areo drag would be better it they had a sharper rear end like the Aptera. Better pressure recovery.

0-60 in 15 seconds is fine for me.
- In traffic, checking my stopwatch, 0-45 in 15 seconds gives me Rapid acceleration, with no-one following me. That's my benchmark. In the real world 0-45 in 15 is fast.
- Now, the auto magazine industry, and any review I'v e seen lately, absolutely insists that 0-60 in anything less then 8 seconds is horrendous.
I say, just another Corrupted information source, just like FOX "news".
Get yourself a stopwatch and make up your own mind.

Sound german engineering. The diesel models might not meet t2b5 u.s standard. The price of the ev model is 2x, it's a downer.
I think that the gt diesel might be a success in europe.

This looks VERY good, now they'll just need a new brand name and a logo with more 'presence'.

Why can't this be produced here? Its supposed to be cheaper to manufacture here now with Bush destroying the dollar :p
A 117mpg diesel sounds good to me. Not sure what that conversion comes out to be but at 117mpg they would sell every single one they could make before it even hit the lot.
If I were in charge of GM I would eliminate Pontiac and Saturn, buy this company, and produce their cars here.

@2: economics of hybrids didn't cut it either when they first showed up here in the US, but that didn't stop them from becoming a success.
@5: I like how you put what seems to be a negative effect of some of the politics of the current government in the US next to what seems to be a positive effect. I'd like to see that become a trend. http://evolution.loremo.com/content/view/98/141/lang,en/ lists the 20 kW as output and states an expected range as 95 miles. That site has more info and renderings.
@9: that same wikipedia page says that they have a small trunk in the front which adds the crumple zone and that the car has passed the "Euro NCAP-Crashtest", in computer simulation, because they didn't want to wreck their prototype for a real crash test.

Drag coefficency of 0.2? You'd think they could do better than that, since the GM EV-1 had a Cd of less than that.
OTOH frontal area is probably smaller on the Loremo.
Really looking forward to this, I hope they can do it. I'd seriously buy one if it was avaialble. Especially the EV version sounds interesting, assuming it has good range.
