Ceres, Range Fuel testing switchgrass and sorghum to make ethanol
Using switchgrass and sorghum, the bio-energy company Ceres will on day make cellulosic ethanol at a plant that is currently being built near Soperton, Georgia. Ceres will work with Range Fuels to make the biofuel over the next few years (this is a test after all, not a commercial endeavor just yet). The biorefinery will mostly make cellulosic ethanol from wood residue, but these alternative sources (alternative to the alternative, in a sense) are in Ceres' sights because "they are highly efficient at storing sunlight in the form of carbohydrates, and they are widely adapted," as the press release pasted after the jump states.[Source: Ceres]

Ceres Trials Energy Crops at Georgia Biofuel Facility
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy crop company Ceres, Inc. announced today that it will trial improved switchgrass cultivars and high-biomass sorghum hybrids with Range Fuels, Inc. as part of a cooperative field trialing program at the site of Range Fuels' commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant, now under construction near Soperton, Georgia, about 150 miles southeast of Atlanta.
While wood residues will be the primary feedstock for this first-of-a-kind biorefinery, Ceres said that Range Fuels is also interested in better understanding the economic, environmental and logistical attributes of non-food, low-carbon grass species in the production of cellulosic biofuels. These grass species have a number of advantages: they have relatively rapid breeding cycles, they are highly efficient at storing sunlight in the form of carbohydrates, and they are widely adapted. Last spring, Ceres provided seed of new, high-yielding varieties that was planted in demonstration plots on Range Fuels' Soperton Plant site. The crops will be assessed for several years.
"The goal is to determine the best crop management, storage and handling practices for Georgia, and just as important, the performance of herbaceous biomass in Range Fuels' conversion process," said Anna Rath, Ceres vice president of commercial development. She noted that grass species, including both annuals and perennials, can provide a flexible and reliable supply of raw materials for fuel and power. "This is an important step in demonstrating that energy crops can be successfully and sustainably grown in the area surrounding the Range Fuels Soperton Plant site," she said.
Mitch Mandich, CEO of Range Fuels, said this project will inform future expansion decisions by the green energy company. "As we think about expanding production beyond our Soperton Plant, which will use woody biomass, we need to start understanding how a variety of high-yield, minimal impact biomass feedstocks, such as those being explored by Ceres, can assist in our expansion efforts. Our relationship with Ceres will be invaluable in this process."
Ceres recently announced that it will commercialize its first seed varieties under the trade name Blade Energy Crops. Rath said that the company will begin booking seed orders this fall for the 2009 growing season. "We are getting calls from agricultural producers interested in putting 10 or 20 acres in the ground to gain a better understanding of these crops. Some are located near existing or planned biorefineries, while others are looking to attract biorefineries to their area," she said. Rath noted that grass crops appear to be well suited to both thermochemical conversion systems as well as biochemical processes that utilize enzymes in the production of biofuels.

Bring on the development of switchgrass/miscanthus cellulosic ethanol! This is huge! The US could use CRP land to reduce our oil imports in a way that uses almost no irrigation or pesticides and has a very high EROEI. And after the universities genetically modify these grasses they will probably return even more energy per acre. This is win-win.

But at what price?
The subsidy per gallon is already twice that for corn-based ethanol.
And nobody knows exactly where we'll get all this "waste".

Carbon is carbon as a basic biofuel's building block.
Thus the only core biofuel building block for Range's new thermochemical conversion process is carbon derived from gasified wood chips.
Why grow low-carbon grasses or sorghum using copious quantities of fresh water with petrochemical fertilizers for just one annual harvest of these non-food crops using diesel tractors -- when there is so much waste carbon available from society's waste streams of sludge and garbage?
Gasification is the proposed "front-end" of this two-step gas-to-liquids thermochemical conversion and catalysis process which will be used to isolate the low volume carbon from the switchgrass. Why bother growing any new crop for it's carbon content (carbohydrates) when there is so much higher carbon-containing waste available without planting anything?
It is evident that people quickly can go gaga over something like non-food products like switchgrass vs: growing/harvesting corn kernels.
Please stop and realize that the process for isolating and recombining these basic carbon atoms is totally different here - it has nothing to do with "actual ligno-cellulosic" batch fermentation. Ligno-cell conversion involves far more expensive and extra acidic enzymes used to slow-cook a 4-day corn kernel process into a 7-day cook and fermentation process for true ligno-cellulosic ethanol and at far greater costs providing far lesser yields of the target ethanol.
Why term this whole Soperton, GA brohaha as ligno-cellulosic in the first place when it definately is not?
I'm also wondering how Range is going to isolate the ASTM ethanol portion from a mixture of alcohols thus produced by catalytic GTL synthesis?
I sense an overload of spin herein with the whole truth not being anywhere clearly understood by laymen or gov't bureaucrats who have supported this particular biofuel project and others with taxpayers money as freebie grants.
Repeat: Why low-carbon switchgrass or sorghum which must be planted, watered and annually harvested?
How is ligno-cellulosic ethanol going to be isolated herein and why?

@ Gary: You're a shill. WE don't want ethanol made from corn! There's thousands of unforested square miles available for biomass production. Have you driven through the Midwest lately? Your argument about investment vs. return is baloney BECAUSE:
1:Tractors and distillers can run on fuel made from biomass. Or hadn't you thought of that?
2: Once truly endorsed and industrialized, the process of extraction becomes exponentially more efficient.
3: The ExXon Valdez is no Prius. Think that thing runs on love?
4: Though a few bogus "science" articles claim otherwise, ethanol burns super-clean, and THAT is our greatest return. We owe it to ourselves, our planet and our descendants.
