EU to make purchase of green cars "mandatory"

The EU has just announced that from 2010 onwards, all government agencies should purchase only "green cars." Exactly what the EU considers to be a "green car" for this purposes has yet to be determined, but upcoming legislation should clear the definition for the 27 country members and will include similar rules for all companies working in the public segment. Vehicles used for public works, at airports, and for most emergency services would be exempt from this measure. This new rule could have a significant impact on the auto industry. According the European Parliament, 16 percent of European country budgets is spent on transportation vehicles. That comes to 110,000 passenger cars, 110,000 vans, 35,000 trucks and 17,000 buses per year.

I live in Italy and this would be a great step forward as I see hundreds of local government cars whizzing around all the time. I think if they were at least hybrids it would be good, but full EV would be great.

I live in Italy too , and here the government credits
business and local authorities with 65% of the purchase
price when they buy a zero emission vehicle and
register it for road use.
Unfortunately this has the effect of raising the price
of these cars to an unrealistic level , 38000 euros
for a Fiat Panda anyone ? also making sure that
the ordinary individual will never be able to purchase
one , but then that was maybe the primary function
of this subvention.
There is also much abuse of this credit too.
A manufacturer close to where I live is building an
electric car , they then sell them to an associate
company who registers them and claims 20000 euros
per car , then de-registers them two days later
and ships them over the border into Switzerland
where they are resold as new cars ! thus defrauding
the italian taxpayer, and possibly the EU,( they
probably pay a contribution towards this scheme )
and putting back the widespread introduction of
zero emission cars by years !

WARNING!! Misleading headline!!!
Headline SHOULD read:
EU to make GOVERNMENT purchase of green cars "mandatory". (Citizens can buy what they can afford since their fiat currencies are being debased by taxpayer funded bank bailouts. Most blame corrupt politicians)
“If the American people should ever allow private banks to control the money supply; first by inflation, and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that grow up around them will deprive the people of their property until their children wake up homeless on the land that their fathers conquered.” -Thomas Jefferson
