EU to make purchase of green cars "mandatory"

The EU has just announced that from 2010 onwards, all government agencies should purchase only "green cars." Exactly what the EU considers to be a "green car" for this purposes has yet to be determined, but upcoming legislation should clear the definition for the 27 country members and will include similar rules for all companies working in the public segment. Vehicles used for public works, at airports, and for most emergency services would be exempt from this measure. This new rule could have a significant impact on the auto industry. According the European Parliament, 16 percent of European country budgets is spent on transportation vehicles. That comes to 110,000 passenger cars, 110,000 vans, 35,000 trucks and 17,000 buses per year.
