New green supercar to come from BMW

Green supercar. is is an oxymoron? A contradiction in terms? Not so, according to BMW, which is currently working on just such a machine. Still in its early stages, the Bavarian vehicle is not expected to hit the market until 2012 or so and will reportedly be based on the M1 Homage concept that the automaker showed just a while back. That wedge-shaped supercar will be moved by a 3.0-liter inline six cylinder engine that should receive direct injection to go along with its twin turbochargers. A version of this engine is already powering models from BMW that end in 35i and it puts out over 300-horsepower in its current state of tune. We'd expect more than that from the supercar version, and rumors also indicate that Efficient Dynamics will be adding stop/start, regenerative braking and possibly even a road-going version of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System that is current being refined for Formula 1 use starting next year. Fuel economy, emissions and carbon output should match that of the firm's 5 Series midsize sedan.

Fuel economy for the midsize sedan ranges from 18/28 mpg to 15/22
mpg.
Pardon me for saying, but a standard Corvette gets 16/26 and the Z06
gets 15/24. Even the ZR1 comes in at around 22 mpg highway.
How do fuel economy figures of 18/28 classify it as a "green
supercar"? And with the mill only cranking out around 300 bhp, it had
better be a flyweight on the scales if they intend to market it as a
supercar.
If this is a green supercar then my Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T is a
fuel-efficient pickup truck.
I know this is to pay homage to the M1, but imho, it looks like a concept car drawn back in 1991 that they resurrected just for kicks. Back to the drawing board BMW!

Hmmm, if this concept contained a performance version of electric power-train going into Mini E, I could see how this could be called a "green supercar." As is, it is as green as their Hydrogen 7 ICE car... Back to the dustbin.

This is one of the slickest looking cars I have seen in a long, long time. Looking forward to it.
