As Chrysler deathwatch continues, most '09s get mileage tweaks

Things are not looking good in Auburn Hills these days. It's looking increasingly like Chrysler is about to head off to hospice to live out its final days as Cerberus has given up on trying to revive the littlest of the Detroit 3. But even as the turkey vultures circle outside waiting for the carcass to cool off, the engineers in the tech center are still trying to show some signs of life, no matter how meek. To that end they have been working away, trying to tweak the mileage numbers of most of the lineup. They have managed to improve the numbers of 73 percent of the surviving models for 2009. With the exception of the soon to be euthanized Durango and Aspen hybrids, the improvements are only 1-2 mpg but when you don't have much to work with, you do what you can. Considering most of the models had no significant hardware upgrades, getting what they did is something of an achievement. Unfortunately, it may all be for naught soon as Chrysler seems almost certain to be killed off either by absorption or liquidation. The Chrysler press release is after the jump.

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Oct 31, 2008 - As 2009 model year vehicles arrive in local Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® showrooms, customers will be pleased to find that fuel economy has increased on 19 of Chrysler LLC's car, truck and SUV models, representing 73 percent of the entire product lineup. American consumers could see savings of as much as 6.7 million gallons of fuel per year with the 2009 fuel economy improvements.
"Chrysler is committed to improving fuel economy for our customers, and we consistently look at viable technologies to help us achieve that goal," said Bob Lee, Vice-President – Powertrain Product Team. "With offerings such as our Multi-displacement System (MDS), Active Transfer Case and Front-axle Disconnect, we are able to deliver consumers fuel economy improvements in a majority of our 2009 models."
In total, six Chrysler brand models (Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Chrysler 300, Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Chrysler Aspen), nine Dodge brand models (Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Dodge Charger, Dodge Charger SRT8, Dodge Durango, Dodge Nitro, and Dodge Ram 1500) and four Jeep models (Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Commander) have better fuel economy than their 2008 predecessors.
Best-In-Class
Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles hold numerous best-in-class fuel economy claims for the 2009 model year. The 2009 Dodge Journey offers the best fuel economy in its class with 19 city and 25 highway. The 2009 Jeep Compass 4x4 and Jeep Patriot 4x4 have the best EPA estimated highway fuel economy and are the most fuel efficient four-wheel-drive vehicles in their class. The new 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids deliver best-in-class fuel economy of up to 22 miles per gallon which is an improvement of more than 53 percent in the city and 40 percent overall. The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan offer better highway fuel economy than the leading full-size crossover vehicle and hold an unsurpassed fuel economy for a minivan with 17 city and 25 highway.
Engineering Innovations Make a Difference
For the 2009 model year a more fuel efficient and more powerful version of the renowned 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine has been introduced on various models.
The all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine delivers as much as a five percent improvement in fuel economy – along with more horsepower and torque – courtesy of Variable Valve Timing, expanded four-cylinder mode in the MDS and a host of other technologies. The all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is available on the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and 300; Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango, Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander.
New technologies on the 2009 Chrysler 300 and the 2009 Dodge Charger include Active Transfer Case and Front Axle Disconnect. Chrysler is the only manufacturer to pair these two technologies on the same vehicle. Chrysler's system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with no driver intervention by disconnecting the front wheels from the drivetrain to reduce friction and rotational inertia. The system provides optimal traction, performance and safety, as well as a fuel economy improvement of one mpg (combined city/highway).

I own a dodge neon 2005 without options at all and manual 5 speeds transmission. As no car on sale are interresting and looking at what is coming on the market in the near-term, mid-term and long-term future then i will keep it for at least 20 more years. I hope to put fuel in it that come from green algae farming or natural gas from sewage or natural gas feilds but i doubt it will be possible because chatters, car manufacturers, car distributors, investment funds compagnies, goverments, banks, army, petrol compagnies, journalists, drivers, scientists, religious people and organisations, artists, big employees unions, speculators, billionairs of all sort, politicians, backyards inventors and business man wannabees, charitable entities, etc, all these peoples have rejected violently my ideas in the last year and have decided unnoficially but have decided in reality to reject each and all of my ideas and accepted to kill the planet and everything on it including themselfs for the rest of time to come. We just live temporarilly now with old farts industrialisation without the necessary new ideas and products, the last strech of agony have beginned when my ideas that i write here have been rejected definitely 2-3 months ago.
I just hope i will be able to find replacement parts for my neon when the time come, like brake pads, mufflers, rubber timing belt.
I won't regret this silly compagny except just regret the superior suspention of their regular car in the sixties and seventies or the shape of the barracuda and the sound and feel and power of the hemi. The tousands and tousands of employees that lose their jobs can maybe find new jobs at honda, toyota, nissan, hyundai, mazda, tata, mahindra and mahindra, suzuki, tesla, eco-fuelers, zenn cars, factories and distribution centers or just plain jobs at macdonnals or walmart or municipal sewage plants.

Gorr, all those people rejected your "ideas" due to bad spelling, bad grammar, and most of all your excessive over-the-top ranting that made them immediately assume you were nuts. Reread you own post for a prime example. No one "violently" rejected your ideas as there was no threats or violence directed against you. No one has "accepted to kill the planet and everything on it including themselfs for the rest of time to come" - see what I mean by over-the-top ranting?
You will find people will pay more attention if you tone it down and make a logical reasonable argument.

Chris m, i know that im right because i check what the peoples acting in new ' products' say and especially when they say it. Its the dates of the saying that is important, not the grammar,style or ponctuation. Most people have great ideas and some have succeeded in voicing it sometime and some occupied some great jobs of power, like say, s.albusamid,gorges w bush, elon musk, toyota president, honda president, me, you, chatter x, larry burn, daniel dingel, paris hilton, george clooney, stan meyer, etc.
The difference between me , henry ford and the rest of the people is that i made my own opinions, voice it and stick with it.
People in general are just looking for secure jobs and have opinions just to protect them for a while so they are more confuse and have to listen to everything and dilute everything to fit the jobs in a communist world where each and every good feeling have to be studied by madscientists specialists of something. Every empire had vanish by communist mentallity people after been created by a visionary man just before, egypt, inca, ford, rome, france, russia, china, england, the next on the list is u.s.a because people have a urge to kill and defeat the first amendment ' free speach' Did you notice all the hates about working hydrogen and green algae fuel and natural gas and did you notice all the hype about proven unworkable batteries even if car manufacturers have said that it's not working. So the goal of people not led by a visionary is just to kill themself while saying it's the other person fault.

If there anything in that rant about the state of Chrysler, it wasn't obvious.
No one is stifling free speech. You seem to be making the same erroneous complaint as Sarah Palin. People pointing out her mean spirited attacks or pointing out that you are babbling incoherent nonsense isn't stifling your right to do either, they are just exercising their free speech and pointing it out.
I got nothing out of trying to read the above post because it was painfully incoherent ranting. I just noted the part on free speech (speach sic) and decided to point out the error you have in common with Mrs Palin. (along with a generally incomprehensible way of communicating).
If you actually have a point to communicate. I suggest you write a couple of drafts offline first and then pare it down to a summary version. Then maybe someone will understand whatever it is you are trying to say.

I have a 1998 5-speed Neon. My average fuel economy over the 66,000 miles I've owned it is 38 mpg. Best tank was 48 mpg; worst tank was 30. This is in Minnesota, with its six months of winter. The car now has 181,000 miles, is still on its original clutch, and has had one timing belt replacement. I bought it for $1,200 and have put a total of $1,300 in repairs into it, mostly right after I bought it. My ammortization and repair cost is 4 cents per mile, and the fuel cost at present prices is 4 cents per mile. No hybrid is going to get you underneath these costs.
I'm also driving a 2000 Plymouth Voyager with the 4-cylinder. I'm averaging 27 mpg over the 15,000 miles I've owned it. Best has been 33 mpg; worst was 23. I paid $2,000 for the car and put $500 in repairs into it. I've driven two Mopar minivans past 300,000 miles and four past 250,000. The 3.3 liter engine has been bulletproof. When I was still farming, I used a minivan instead of a pickup, because 90% of the time it was better than a pickup.
Chrysler has made good, solid vehicles. Daimler ruined Chrysler by turning it into a truck company. Remember, back in 1993, Chrysler was almost out of the truck business. Cerberus is a group of private investors who are only interested in making money, not vehicles. I had no trust whatsoever that Cerberus would salvage Chrysler. I think Daimler chose Cerberus for a buyer exactly because they thought that Cerberus would fail, leaving the auto market with one less competitor for Daimler.
It's unfortunate, because over the years, Chrysler has been the most innovative U.S. auto manufacturer, frequently ahead of its time. It was Chrysler, through its Simca subsidiary, who brought transverse engine/front wheel drive to the U.S, and it was Chrysler that introduced the minivan, the best idea Detroit has had in the last 50 years. Pre-Daimler, Chrysler was able to get a new design to production in less time and for less cost than any manufacturer.
I would like to see Chrysler merge with Nissan/Renault or Citroen/Peugeot. A merger with GM makes no sense from an innovation perspective.

Don't worry about that merger with GM, 'cause it'll be anything but.
GM just wants the $11.7 billion in cash reserves in Chrysler's accounts. Other than that, Chrysler is dead.
But I concur with everything you said. I'll miss Chrysler greatly.

To genwaylaid, My native language is french and my favorite writer is nostradamus. He predicted all the majors events from the 1500 era up to 11 sept 2001 where everybody will officially reject jesus for at least a second time, then i appear again in the air and ask again for a car with a water electrolyser in it that transform the water molecule in hydrogen gas to propel the car forward without cost and pollution.
The way that nostradamus write and me too is that when you write a line many sinners and believers reacts with opposite reactions on the same line. Ex: i want a fuelcell car. Then sinners reacts by opposing that i got a fuelcell car and believers reacts by wanting me to have a fuelcell car. So to conter-react you just repeat again and again the first line with different words and style up to the point of where a normal brain person believer or not that will get my idea and bring the product im ordering to buy at a store near where i live, it take time but it's free to write here in this shopping site called autobloggreen.
