VW to offer Jetta TDI Cup Street edition

We've been covering Volkswagen's Jetta TDI cup races since the very beginning of the series. We've also heaped some high praise on the efficiency of VW's 50-State clean diesel technology. Unfortunately, you can't take one of VeeDub's racers off the track and on to the street, but perhaps the next best thing is coming straight from the factory. With VW's Jetta TDI Cup "Street" edition, buyers who want the look of one of the racers will be able to get it. Expect a modified fascia and ground effects to go along with a price of $26,995. This will almost surely be an appearance package only, so we don't expect any changes to the car's powertrain or suspension components. We're fine with that, as changes to make the car faster would likely have an adverse effect on the car's fuel mileage. Volkswagen is set to introduce the new Jetta TDI Cup Street edition at the upcoming SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

If they put the 170 hp 259 ft lbs torque TDI and GTI suspension and called it the GT TDI You could realistically get 35 + mpg and no less than 29 mpg in the city driving hard. Compare that to a GTI driven hard at about 20 mpg. VW could do well with that set up. And I know, they already have it in Europe.

How would a better suspension and improved brakes adversely effect the fuel mileage? An appearance package is all fine and dandy, but if I'm shelling out for a TDI Cup package, I want something more than just a new fascia and mags.

Agreed this is lame...
More power in a diesel does not mean less mileage, only if you use it and accelerate faster, or drive at higher speeds does it cost you fuel efficiency.
Plus who is going to pay that much more over the base price for what a body kit...???
Make it the real thing (GT TDI) give it the tune 170hp and some better breaks and suspension, and the body kit and wheels. Then you have a car that will sell and be worth paying the extra cash for.
VWOA...? Idiots

i saw the concept up close at this past weekends TDI Cup race. the skinny is a TDI cup front fascia, TDi drivetrain and GLi running gear. the race versions use R8 front brakes and keep the stock rear brakes. the street edition has the GLi red calipers on all corners, and bigger than standard TDi rear brakes.
this has been my dream in the states for years. TDi mileage with the sportiness and handling of the GLi. i own a 90 GLi now but my first car was going to be a 86 turbodiesel.......i was so excited about getting 40+ mpg on the regular.......then i wanted the handling and crispness of the GLI. now we can have both in one amazing package.
