Touareg TDI V6 pricing leaks out, will start at $42,800

Volkswagen's new Touareg V6 TDI may or may not be making its official debut this week in LA. However, pricing information for the diesel SUV does appear to have leaked out onto the web. If accurate, the Touareg TDI will start at $42,800. That's a $2,500 premium over the existing 3.6L V6 gas engine version. That's a slightly higher premium than the Jetta TDI which runs $2,000 over the similarly-equipped gas Jetta. Of course being a German vehicle it's very easy to jack up the price well above that entry point with options like the Lux Plus package at $5,400.The new diesel Touareg should be on sale in January. Thanks to Connor for the tip!

And people like to talk about how the prius's gas savings will never pay for itself.
SUV's are rotting on lots all over, why would people pay so much for an incremental mpg increase when they could get a Ford Escape Hybrid with better mpg for 15k less?

Because the Ford escape doesn't have four wheel drive.
The Ford escape has dual beam headlights

Thats too bad a 4wd hybrid escape doesn't exist because it appears to get 27/29mpg in government testing:

$2,500 isn't much of a price increase on a premium car. It's about the same cost as the navigation system, or a set of larger wheels.
In any case, the vehicle will be worth more come sale time (more efficient vehicles hold their value better), so the real cost is much lower, maybe just a few hundred over the first three years.

Because this isn't a Ford Escape and isn't a hybrid.
The Touareg is not likely to be on the same shopping list as an Escape for most any buyer I can think of.
The Touareg also touts extremely competent off-road dynamics of which the Escape is not so well-known. A diesel engine would be better suited for that duty than a hybrid as well.
They are very different vehicles for very different customers aside from both being SUV's. It's akin to asking why someone would buy a Range Rover over a Hyundai Santa Fe. Both are just SUV's right??
Unlike you though, I don't think those in the market for either of these vehicles will tend to lump them together.

That's $10K less than a base X5 diesel.
I'd take this over an RX400h any day - better driving dynamics, better looking, better highway fuel economy, and class-leading off-road capability - in exchange for poorer city fuel economy.

Thats cheap period. This car is listed in Holland where I live from wait for it. 73.890 Euro. Yeah Euro. And then fill it up with diesel that's really expensive.
You can also get a V10 TDI That's only 117.990 Euro.
And then we haven't had the options yet....You want Individual line Leather? Only 10K extra! Still there?

Just because you're getting screwed worse, doesn't mean $43K is cheap.
