LA 2008: AFS Trinity booth

Not sure if this is exactly the LA Auto Show booth that AFS Trinity refused two weeks ago, but it might as well have been. Instead of their false claims of 150 mile per gallon equivalent hybrids here at the show, we have, well, nothing. As I said, we're more than willing to accept their claims that their plug-in hybrid technology is solid, but there's no need to BS us with your big numbers. See ya next time.

They ( chris m, joe romm) attaked hydrogen and manufacturers
step out of it and numerous chatters agreed with them. After
they attaked manufacturers again with phev patent rights but
manufacturers except gm didn't agreed with them and are
beginning to fight back a little bit. I hope manufacturers get back
to hydrogen technology and cease to collaborate with them.
They are madscientists protected by u.s.a goverment.

Dear Mr. Gorr,
This is a communique from HHOnda (yes you always knew we were the ones). Despite persistent efforts of u.s.a. government, big oil, cia, fbi, nsa, g.m., ford, tesla, aptera, madscientists, environmentalists, rothschild, putin, abdul aziz, chavez, hussein(*), and last but not at all least chris m to block the success of our hyperogen-powered HHOnda Clarity FCX, we are are finally ready to offer to the *chosen* public. In recognition of your faith, support, and continuous defense of hydrogen propulsion initiatives we would like to offer you an exclusive chance to *own* (yes you've read it right) a vehicle we know you love and admire.
To take advantage of this exclusive offer, please wire $1 million dollars in $9 thousand dollar increments (*2) to our bank account in Aruba for a chance to own your very own piece of hydro-future. In recognition of your foresight and technical brilliance we will supply a free Phill station that you can integrate with your secret hydrolyzer to fuel your HHOnda Clarity FCX with free hydrogen (*3) for life right at home!
We look forward to having you as a customer and a true pioneer of hydrogen revolution. Viva Stan -- your blood will be revenged!
Sincerely,
HHOnda

What's this author's Deal with AFS Trinity? They have explained how they got their milage rating.
GM balked at the idea that their Volt would get a 48mpg rating, and he didn't seem to have a problem saying the Volt should get a 100 plus mpg.
I'll be curious to see how the EPA will "blend" the mileage rating and the kilowatt rating and see how close AFS Trinity's estimate comes.
False clams? The don't seem false to me. And as for BS, he seems to be the one full of it, not them.

Miles per GALLON claims for a plug-in vehicle are BS. It's BS for Trinity and it's BS for the Volt (if plugged in).
It is misleading (false) for either manufacturer to provide mpg ratings without limiting those numbers to the liquid fuel source.

I don't think it's possible to calculate an MPG value for a plug-in hybrid that wouldn't offend someone...

Sebastian,
You may call their 150-mpg number B.S., but you HAVE to admit that using ultracapacitors to buffer and protect the VERY expensive battery packs is a GREAT IDEA!
Ultracapacitors:
* Buffer the pack
* Extend the life of the pack
* Allow for cheaper pack chemistry
* Allow for greater acceleration without heating the pack
* Capture MORE regen braking without heating the pack
* Make electric cars less expensive with longer lives.
* Allow OFF THE SHELF components to make EVs NOW!
Is there anything I forgot to mention?
Oh, right. The 150-mpg number is STILL being debated because the calculation criteria has not been chosen yet so until THAT happens...
STOP CALLING PEOPLE LIARS UNTIL YOU CAN PROVE THEM WRONG!
(arrogant: exaggerating or disposed to exaggerate one's own worth or importance often by an overbearing manner)
This is how it works... YOU report facts, WE comment and make fools of ourselves with opinions.
By the way, I REALLY enjoy and appreciate your reports and that's why I come here each day. Please stay objective.

If someone claims to have achieved something that nobody else has, the burden of proof is on THEM. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And until said evidence is produced, remaining skeptic is just common sense.
Secondly, regarding your arrogant statement
"This is how it works... YOU report facts, WE comment and make fools of ourselves with opinions."
No it's not. It's their blog, they can write whatever the f*ck they want.

I've been harping on them also, but I don't think we should be too harsh on them. While I don't agree with the way they came up with the number, as long as they disclose clearly how they got the 150 mpg number then there shouldn't be too much of a problem.
The Volt is also working out a deal with the EPA to get a 100+mpg rating. However I do feel the Volt numbers are a lot "fairer" because the Volt will probably get 50 mpg on charge sustaining more, whereas the Trinity can only get 20mpg, yet because of the method AFS uses, they came up with a higher number than the Volt, though the Volt is obviously more efficient.

This 150 mpg thing should be easy to resolve for everyone.
All they need to do is drive their vehicle and an unmodified version of this Satrun for a month, and instead of reporting the estimated/real/effective mpg rating, report on the cost of liquid fuel + electric energy for the miles driven.
If the AFS claims are as good as they say, they can use an artifically low price per gallon of fuel, and an artificailly high price per KWh for electricity, and show that even when the deck is not stacked in their favor they shine.
Maintenance aside, this should be the equalizer. I'd love to see the something like "Drive while paying 45% of the energy costs you do today".
