Tata shows off Indica Electric at Bologna Motor Show

While most of the automotive-related attention accorded to Tata comes as a result of the Nano and the Jaguar and Land Rover brands it bought from Ford, we shouldn't forget the Indica. Tata has been building the Indica for some time, but there is a new variant on display at the Bologna Motor Show this week. The Indica Electric uses a lithium ion battery to provide a claimed range of about 120 miles. The batteries are apparently lithium polymer similar to those that Hyundai will be using in its upcoming Sonata Hybrid. Unlike that other Indian built EV, the G-Wiz, this one is actually a real car, with 0-60 acceleration of about 10 seconds and capacity for four adults. The Indica Electric is expected to launch in Europe in summer 2009 although no indication of the price has been provided yet. Thanks to Jaz for the tip!

In the UK, the Tata Indica was, for a few years, imported by Rover (till Rover collapsed 3 years ago), and rebadged as CityRover. It was dirt cheap. Much more spacious than other cars at the same price. Lithium polymer batteries will obviously add a serious chunk to the price - but will be doing so on a base car that is inexpensive and already proven. If they can keep the overall price below say £11k ($16k), I reckon it will sell well.

I agree with GNR and Stan
It's not the prettiest girl at the dance, but if it could get to market in the US, I'd have to give it a serious look.

I've been in a normal ICE version of the Indica in India, it's not a bad car. I'd compare it to other cheaper cars like Hyundai.
