Daimler is expanding the e-mobility test program that will launch in Berlin in 2009 to Italy. 100 Smart ForTwo ED models will go into service in Rome, Milan and Italy in 2010. Italian power provider Enel will set up a network of 400 smart charging stations in those three cities. Daimler will supply and maintain the cars while Enel will provide the electricity from renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar and geothermal. The Enel charging stations will be able to get identification data from the car when it's plugged in, allowing the operator of the vehicle to be billed directly for the electricity used. The charging infrastructure will also be able to communicate remotely with vehicles allowing drivers to locate available charging points.

What magic knowledge do they want to find out by testing 100 electric vehicles here and 100 there?
Another company is working on getting rid of oil by making it possible to switch easily to electric cars for entire nations.
Daimlers attemps just look like an excuse in comparison.
If they would be really interested in making the change happen, they would work with them or set up a comparable system - not this public relations "look dad I really try".

I think MB intended to keep testing this car until
all the oil on the planet is used !
Its just one huge con , anyway my message to all those
car manufacturers out there is that I will not consider
buying a new car until I am given the choice of buying
a electric one !
At this rate I will end up with a Chinese one , well so
be it !

Rome, Milan and Italy are not "three cities" :)

(Unless considering Berlin, but it's a bit unclear)
