Detroit Preview: Ford will reveal more details on 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines

At the Detroit Auto Show next month, Ford will be announcing details on its first four cylinder EcoBoost engine. That is expected to be a 1.6L engine which will be built in the UK starting in 2010. In October, the company announced a $110 million investment at its Bridgend plant in Wales for the new engine.

When Ford first announced its upcoming Ecoboost engines at this year's Detroit Auto Show, the company indicated there would be both V6 and inline four cylinder examples. The first to appear will be a 3.5L V6 for the Lincoln MKS and Ford Flex this spring. The Explorer America concept shown in Detroit was spec'ed out with the V6 and 2.0L four cylinder. An even smaller 1.2L EcoBoost has also been hinted at as a potential powerplant for the Fiesta.

The 2.0L EcoBoost is expected to eventually be offered in the Fusion as an alternative to the 3.0L V6. Like the upcoming V6, the four cylinder engines use a combination of turbocharging and direct injection to achieve improved fuel efficiency. The engines will also have reduced weight and the output of larger engines.
