Detroit 2009: Volvo S60 Concept introduces 4-cylinder EcoBoost

Volvo rolled out a new concept sedan here that previews the next generation of its mid-size S60 sedan. The swoopy sedan has almost coupe-like proportions with its flowing back-light and curves that a 240 fan would never recognize as a Volvo. Most important is what's under the hood. The 1.6L four cylinder is a preview of Ford's first small displacement EcoBoost engine. With direct injection and turbocharging, the 1.6L mill produces 180 hp and scores a combined 47 mpg (U.S.). Carbon dioxide emissions are a mere 119g/km. In addition to the GTDI engine, the S60 is equipped with automatic start/stop, a dual clutch 6-speed gearbox, electric power steering and a grille shutter. That last element closes off air-flow to radiator when not needed and reduces aerodynamic drag. The new engine is due to start production later in 2009 for European Fords and we'll probably see it here eventually.

It's good to see a 1.6L ecoboost. I wonder what kind of EPA rating (not this Eurocycle BS) it'd get in a Fusion.

Or imagine this engine in a Fusion Hybrid... I'd imagine well over 50 mpg combined...

I'd love to see this engine compared to a 2.5 four with GDI.I think a big four could have more power,but less torque,would surely cost less. and last longer.Fuel economy is the big unknown.

That is a great looking car. Volvo- always knew you had it in you. Now, bring it to production (& ditch the copper).
This sedan/coupe (like the VW CC) is very appealing.

Wow, that EcoBoost 4cyl is incredible! It should be offered in every U.S. Focus (with great horsepower AND fuel economy, no optional engines are needed) and perhaps a Fiesta Sport model, and as the Fusion 4cyl model as well. Spread the love.

Then again, the wording may not be so clear. Is it really the engine that gets 47mpg? Or does it achieve that in this particular application - with start/stop, DCA gearbox, and concept aerodynamic body? Either way, at 1.6L with 180hp, it sounds like an excellent engine.

In this particular application the powertrain is rated at 47 mpg. The same hardware in the Lincoln concept C was 43 mpg. Either way in most applications the combo of the 1.6 ecoboost, dct and start-stop will probably get low to mid 40s
