Audi approves range of eco models to challenge BMW and Mercedes

The VW concept BlueSport could spawn the Audi E2

A new range of cars are about to join Audi's existing A, S, RS, and Q models. The company has reportedly approved the new E1, E2, E3, E4, and E5 which will be focused more in efficiency than performance. The smallest E1 will be Audi's variation on VW's NSF platform, the one that spawned the up! concept cars. The Audi-bodied version will be a battery-powered city car to go against the smart ed and whatever BMW produces from its Project i. Next up is the E2, which will be derived from the modular platform that debuted this past week in Detroit as the VW Concept BlueSport (above). This compact roadster is expected to use 1.2L engines in gas-fueled TSI or diesel TDI forms.

The E3 wil use a lightweight aluminum structure and follow on from the A2 that was sold earlier in this decade. Aside from the construction techniques, this one is expected to borrow much of the electrical and mechanical bits from the 2011 A3. The E4 would be a compact, tall roof MPV that could get a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Rounding things out will be the E5, a lightweight mid-engine sports car that takes advantage of low mass for both efficiency and performance enhancements.
