New hybrid tech being developed for ALMS, possible new fuel to come

These days, its not much easier to run a racing series than it is to run a car company. However, if there is any series boss who could be said to be in an "enviable" situation, it is Scott Atherton, CEO of the American Le Mans Series. Coming off its tenth anniversary in 2008, the series had its most successful season yet. However, the loss of Audi and Porsche as full time competitors certainly stings, although not to the same degree that Formula One is feeling right now. Even with manufacturers cutting budgets across the board, Atherton sees reason for optimism.

In an interview last week at the Detroit Auto Show, Atherton revealed that another manufacturer will announce a GT race program at the opening race in Sebring in March. In addition, at least one other manufacturer is working with ALMS officials on approving a new type of hybrid technology. Finally, a fourth fuel may be added to the mix at ALMS events. There are already three fuels being used by competitors: diesel, E10 and cellulosic E85. An energy company has approached the series about another alternative although Atherton declined to be specific about what it is at this time. Check out the full interview at Green Fuels Forecast.
