Top 20 efficient European gasoline-powered compact sedans

What?!? A list of European cars that does not include diesels? Crazy? Of course not. Although gasoline vehicles in Europe suffer from tough diesel competition, automakers still build them and are able to find plenty of buyers. While sales of compact sedans have taken a hit in recent years - replaced by sales of compact minivans and sport utes as the kings of family hauling - there's nothing like a classic sedan to enjoy your on the Autobahn or autoroute (hopefully sans péage). For your perusal, we found a list of available cars that are as efficient as possible. Check it out after the jump.

Wow, I never realized that BMW had a gas car that got 40 on the EU cycle... impressive.. not being sarcastic there, funny how that engine combination doesn't make its way here...
Who would have thought, a couple of german cars make it to the top of the list...

Am I missing something? It clearly says mpg U.S. over the column... That would be the US cycle, right?

no its EU cycle converted into mpg... many of those car aren't sold here.. the EU cycle is a little different, now that I think about it, that 40 mpg of the Beamer is probably stretching it a little bit in normal mixed, but im sure on long stretches of road, that's probably about right under the right foot...

I'm surprised to see Volvo S40, but not S30 in the list. Is the S30 only available as diesel in Europe?

@Stan-O:
Is S30 a sedan?
And it has two gasoline engines a 1.6L and the T5(2.5 Turbo), the same as S40.

This list is our future. Compact/midsize sedans with tiny 4 cylinder engines and low horsepower. Consumers used to 170 hp 4 cylinders and 250 hp 6 cylinders in their Camry/Accord/Altima/Fusion are in for a shock.
It will be interesting how consumers respond when the emissions and CAFE standards that will mandate such small engines goes into effect if gas is $2.00 gallon.

there's no such thing as Volvo S30. It's C30 and it isn't a "compact sedan". you can get C30 with 1.6l, 1.8l, 2.0l, 2.4l and T5 gasoline engines or 1.6l, 2.0l and D5 diesels.
BMW's efficient dynamics did wonders for thier 4 cylinder engines. direct injection with piezo injectors that allow lean burn mode at relatively high rpm, Valvetronic, auto start-stop, regenerative braking, electric powered AC, shades in front grille that allow only required amout of air to reach the radiator thus improving drag coef and allowing quicker warm-up especially in cold weather and so on. 320i has 177 hp and it consumes fuel 6.1 l/100 km(38.5 mpg).
