REVA opens new green factory in Bangalore

REVA, the Indian electric car company that produces mostly NEVs, has announced that is building a new manufacturing facility near Bangalore, India. The new 18,212 m2 plant, which is expected to produce 30,000 units per year, will build both the current REVAi model (known as the G-Wiz in the UK) as well as a new model using lithium-ion batteries by the end of the current year. REVA also announced that the plant is environmentally friendly: it uses harvested rainwater, maximizes the use of natural ventilation and light, solar energy harvesting, steel structure technology and a CO2 monitor. All this guarantees that it gets the LEED environmental certification. The Indian manufacturer has already about 2,000 EVs zapping around London and Bangalore and distributes its models in some eight other European countries. Full press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE:

REVA, the manufacturer of the REVA electric car, is building a new assembly plant in Bangalore, with a capacity of 30,000 units per annum, to accommodate the increased production of its best-selling REVA, as demand increases worldwide, and for the planned one new model per year from the end of 2009.

The new 18,212 sqm state-of-the-environment production facility has a contemporary design and low energy requirements. It is being built to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system standard, which is an internationally accepted rating system and benchmark for evaluating and certifying sustainable sites. The assembly floor is complemented architecturally by an administration block that, in an initial audit carried out by certifying agencies, will qualify for platinum level LEED certification.

The environmentally-friendly facilities will include rainwater harvesting, natural light and ventilation, solar energy harvesting, steel structure technology and a C02 monitor. For the staff there will be a modern canteen, games room and electric buses to transport them to and from work. The surrounding area will be fully landscaped with plants and flowers.

The iconic REVA electric car is a world leader; there are over 2,000 already on the roads in London and Bangalore, with a distribution network being built up across Europe, South America and parts of Asia. REVA's aim is to launch one new electric car per year from 2009 and working through distributors, will be developing a range of sales and after-sales operating models appropriate to each country.

In Europe the REVA is available in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, France and Norway. Distributors in Hungary and Slovenia have just been signed up and a master importer/distributor is being sought for all remaining European countries. Keith Johnston, president of European operations says, 'The recent European Parliament announcement on its revision of its 2020 renewable energy targets of 10% on renewable fuel now also includes renewable electricity to power cars and trains, where renewable energy used will count as 2.5 times the amount. This is a really positive endorsement of electric vehicles and their important role in the future of motoring and we hope that this is now reflected in the policies of governments across the EU. REVA's new production facility will mean that the company will be much better equipped to increase production as demand for electric cars increases'.
