Washington 2009: picture fun with the Saturn Flextreme

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Saturn Flextreme
One of the guilty pleasures available during the quiet period before the public days of an auto show is taking pictures when no one is around. We've seen the Saturn Flextreme (and it's Opel cousin) before, but haven't seen it spinning around on the stand all by itself, just asking for a few shutter clicks. We obliged, of course, and present you with these images. We got a little carried away with the long shutter speeds and liked the trippy effects they created. Oh, to have our fisheye with us at all times.
Technical details on this Volt-like plug-in hybrid concept can be found here. This post is all about the pics. Enjoy.

Forget the Fisheye. I wish you had brought a tripod.

They call it the FLEXtreme, but it's not even flex-fueled. Like the Ford Flex, which also is not flex-fueled.
And the Flextreme's competitor, the Chevy Volt, IS flex fueled, with its ICE able to run on E85.
Go figure.

This isn't a "competitor" to the Chevy Volt, it is a car from another division of GM, and it uses the same type of series hybrid design as the Volt. That technology was originally called "E-Flex" because it was "flexible" and could use a variety of different range extenders, including diesel engines, gasoline, "flex fuel",. H2 fuel cell, etc.
I never heard anything about the Volt using a flex fuel engine, though it certainly would be possible. Of course, the same engine could and probably would be available for the Saturn Flextreme, if it was ever produced.

Chris M., I'm on my iPhone so I can't copy and paste, but click the link on the word "here" in the article for another FlexTreme article that mentions the Volt's flex fuel capability.

The 'Flex' part of the moniker never had anything to do with running on E85, and neither did the 'E-Flex' Volt. It referred only to the powertrain design, which has since changed names from 'E-Flex' to 'Voltec'.

I like the overall look, but those headlights just scream out to me "Hey, look, I'm styled, I'm different". I'm not much of a fan of the rear end either. It just seems to be trying too hard.

I really like the design (better than the Volt, which I like but not as well), and am hoping we'll be able to buy one here in the good ol' US (since Saturn will probably be gone long before this gets to market from Opel).
