Yes, she did it again: Daryl Hannah shows off her new biodiesel El Camino
Click above and scroll down to watch the video
If you love something, do it again. After Daryl Hannah sold her first biodiesel El Camino for $15,600 a year ago, she said she would convert the Trans Am she drove in "Kill Bill" to electric power. That never happened, and at the recently-concluded National Biodiesel Conference & Expo, Hannah showed off her new ride: another biodiesel El Camino. Hannah says that her new ride (same as the old ride) only drinks sustainable biodiesel. This makes sense for many reasons, including that she is a big supporter of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance and that new sustainable biodiesel standards were announced at the Expo. You can see Hannah show off her car as part of the Expo's Biodiesel Vehicle Showcase in a video after the jump, but be warned that the audio is less than pleasing.

What a terrible video. Bad sound, bad cinematography...why bother posting this?

Yes, the cinematographer should have his credentials revoked. Surely the Academy will take action over this atrocity.

If you're gonna drive an El Camino, the least you could to is drop it by the Pimp My Ride boys. What a piece of crap looking car. Oh, & the video quality sucks too.

if daryl hannah told me to buy 20 edsel's, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
jfk jr was a moron for dumping her.

a major caveat about diesels...
yes, they are very efficient engines and the emissions are far lower than previous decades.
The problem that will arise, especially in California, is that the CO2 standards may very well increase the return of the % of diesels on the road. during the 70's, diesels were dominating the market, and smog(nitogen based pollutants) was at a critical level. One of the most significant factors in the reduction of smog was the switch from diesels to less efficient engines, NOT pollution standards.
Even with the improved emissions, forcing california to return to a dependence on diesels to comply with pending CO2 standards, factoring the increase in vehicles on the road in CA, may very well return the poor air quality in regards to smog.
a quicker fix for CA?
ban automatic transmissions in privately owned vehicles, but provide exception clauses for elderly or handicapped, and grandfather in all older models, with a modest increase in tax for the use of the automatic.

Please clarify your automatic transmission proposal. I want to understand just what you're getting at.
Is is that automatics cause diesel cars to be less efficient?
They used to cause lower mileage on gasoline cars, but that was a long time ago.
I think you could set up a 6-speed automatic to match a diesel almost optimally.
Or is it that fewer people would drive, since they are not smart enough to learn to shift for themselves?
Because I'm with you on that.
It's also harder to talk on a cell phone while shifting. But don't think they won't try.

In fact, NOx either creates or destroys ozone (the primary component of "smog"), depending on ambient conditions (in spite of the "smog-forming" adjective usually used to describe NOx). Southern California and virtually all large metropolitan areas in the U.S. where ozone is a significant health concern, are "VOC-limited" with respect to ozone formation, meaning that decreasing ambient NOx levels (at constant ambient hydrocarbon levels) has the potential to make smog WORSE (aka the "weekend effect" and/or "NOx disbenefit").
Thus, switching to diesel vehicles (or anything that doesn't use gasoline) will likely IMPROVE air quality, rather than degrade it, since hydrocarbons are the critical pollutant for smog formation in these conditions.

WTF are you smoking???
While 9 of my 10 vehicles are manuals, it is a personal choice what you want to drive.
Modern automatics typically get equal or better mileage to manuals anyway.
I just prefer the higher performance and control of a manual.
If I had to drive in LA every day I'd probably want an auto myself.
Sonicfrog 6:47PM (2/06/2009)
Yeah, this is horrible. I wonder if this is the same cinematographer that Christian Bale yelled at.

automatic transmission for many, not all, is a luxury.
people who drive standard transmission are driving far more economically, than those who choose automatic. (There are many case where it is justified, but far more cases of where driving an automatic is plain lazy.)
I've looked at the top end cars, briefly, looking for a high performance engine that provided an alternative between standard and auto...
couldn't find and standard models to make the comparison...
if you got one, a newer model with state of the art engines that has both choices, I'd love to see it.
the automatic sentiments are seperate from my diesel theory.
==============================================
The california plan that taxes CO2, is effectively setting the engine output at a certain level. If the engine is inefficient, one can't put a filter to pull the CO2 out...
(the confusion is that treating CO2 as a pollutant, despite it being non-toxic, while it is also part of the outcome of combustion, not a by-product of it, is effectively narrowing indivuals choice and trying to get them to get the best perfroming engines.)
the two choices that will be made available is driving a car that weighs a half ton with an alternative power source, or driving a diesel that will weigh nearly twice as much and getting the same efficiency.

there is a psychological component that exists outside machine testing between auto and std:
which car will you be more likely to press down on the accelerator harder?
if you are making a conscious effort to adjust between shifts, you will not be pushing as hard on an accelerator. The efficency thing is hard to gauge...
both cars traveling a 55-80 mph are getting the same mileage. If the automatic is accelarating faster between two red lights, I'd imagine it is not as efficient. Manual forces one to be far more cognizant of acceleration.

I think the problem with switching to diesel is an Increase in NOX emissions b/c of the higher compression engines. That's a precursor to smog. CO2 emissions are just a natural product of extracting energy from any reduced carbonaceous fuel source, they're not a "pollutant". We exhale C02 from "burning" the food we eat, right?

Ban automatic transmissions?
Why stop there? Ban air conditioners too: as unnecessary as automatics. Electric windows? Gone. They require power and decrease efficiency.
And do we really need heaters? Can't you make do with a lap blanket and a jacket?
And no fat tires. All tires should be four inches or less wide. Better rolling efficiency.
And no convertibles. Extra weight, less aerodynamic efficiency.
Why so many cylinders? Three is plenty. Two is better.
Heck, why stop there? Mopeds for everyone! (Except government elites and Hollywood types, of course.)

Darla Hannah just needs to STFU...Everybody else doesn't have the time or money to convert their cars like she did. Most of us are trying to work and survive at best.We do not have money for someone else to build us a "Responsible "car like she does.I bet I could foolow Darla for a couple weeks and pinpoint so much hypocrisy about her "greenness" that it would make your head spin. Reminds me of Obama telling everyone they should turn their Thermometers down in their houses to save on energy and WE find out he is using tax money(our money) and maxing out the HEAT in the whitehouse to tropical conditions...YES YES we all need to be energy efficient unless you are a Hollywood Elite or a Pompass ASS Polititician like me -I am Obama and I approve this message and so better you or ELSE!!!!!!

One more thing, Daryl PLEASE paint the dang car and swap in a modern diesel from a new pickup to replace the POS 350 GM in there now.
Those engines performed terrible and had numerous reliability issues.

What's wrong with you people?
This is the best film footage of Daryl Hannah's buttocks since her mermaid movie!
That she runs her car(s) on biodiesel is a nice touch.
I wouldn't mind rubbing her with vegetable oils.
