Get your Geld ready: Germany issues final draft on CO2-based taxes

Changing the road tax legislation in Germany wasn't an easy thing to do. This tax is managed at the state level, but a nationwide modification will be enforced now that the German federal government has decided to give €9 billion in compensation to the states. The new road tax, like similar legislation in other European countries, is aimed at stimulating motorists to drive fuel-efficient cars. Here's how the new tax works, starting July 1st:
First, there's a base tax based on displacement: €2 per each 100 cubic centimeters if it's a gasoline car or €9.5 if it's a diesel car. Additional taxes are based on CO2: for each gram over 120 that your car emits per kilometer, your tax will be increased by €2. That CO2 limit will drop to 110 grams in 2012 and, from 2014 onwards, it will be 95 grams. So, for example, the new Toyota IQ 1.33, which emits 113 gm/km. The 1.3-liter gas engine will be taxed at 13 * 2 = €26 and the number will stay the same until 2012. At that time, its owner will be charged an extra €6 additional (€32 in total) because 113-110 = 3 grams at €2 each. Then, in 2014, the tax will be even higher: 113-95 = 18 grams, at €2 each, €36 additional (€62 total). I'll let you do the math with a Porsche Cayenne S.

Would it not be a whole lot easier to just add more tax on the fuel!
Seems like a lot of government B.S. just to collect tax dollars for CO2 when in reality, how much fuel you consume is directly related to how much CO2 your car produces.

A big part of fuel cost in Germany are taxes already.
Gasoline: 65.45 €cent/Liter
Diesel: 47.04 €cent/Liter
That is 3.12 $US/Gallon in taxes alone, for gasoline.
So about 50% of the price is taxes add to that +19% Mehrwertsteuer(more taxes).
But you are right the USA need higher gas taxes.

The true reason for the AGW hysteria. More taxes. Government has an insatiable thirst for more taxes. No you are not right. We don't need more taxes. All those fuel taxes reduced consumption squat. In that bad bargain, they didn't even get clean, non-toxic air. The EU is 25 to 40 years behind the US in cleaning up their air quality.
Why?
Because their motorists can't afford to pay for vehicles with clean air equipment, Thanks to the outrageous fuel taxes. So they get neither clean air, nor a safe environment. Yes, government at it's finest.
And what did the Warmist cynics and government types do with their money. Jet off to Bali for a wild weekend.
I suggest that it is more approprioate to Tar and Feather the politicians and the AGW hoaxers.!

You do not live in Europe, right?
What is this "clean air equipment" you talk of?
Actually motorists have no choice in the matter of getting that equipment, because it is already built in. You can not get a new car without it.
The US still has a long way to go.
And this tax replaces another tax that is already being paid, so it is just the mechanism that changes.
Also you do know that taxes do not become the private property of politicians right?
They get paid from taxes alright, but that is just a relatively small amount.

You do notice that the owner of the Toyota mentioned in the article would need to pay 60€ less with the new tax? How's that a tax increase?
Furthermore the same technology that is used to clean the exhaust gas of cars in Europe is used to clean the exhaust gas of cars in the US.
e.g.: all Daimler utility vehicles will have the exact same exhaust gas treatment system, whether they are sold in Europe, in the US or in Japan.

Finally after years of feeding the sheep stories of "Global Warming" "Climate Change" and " Global Chaos" Its time to shear them of the billions that they would spend on what they want and get it back to the government where it belongs.

LCS, I suggest you look around, politicians spend tax revenue like it is their birth right. Do you really think giving the government more money will benefit anyone other than their pet projects and friends?

"politicians spend tax revenue like it is their birth right."
Not their birthright, but their fucking job.
"Do you really think giving the government more money will benefit anyone other than their pet projects and friends?"
Short answer is, Yes. But that does not mean that taxes should be increased and it is not what this post is about as randomdude pointed out already.
Corruption does exist, it is a problem, but it is not the only thing happening. Most politicians did not pick that job to pocket tax money, but because they wanted to change something they thought is done wrong(a.k.a. pet projects). Politicians are only human, they make mistakes and the way the system works does not mean that they are always placed in a position best suited to their skills.
"Never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained by incompetence."
That is the price we pay for this system and our own (political) indifference.

LCS,
What an unbelievable and uneducated person you are. The cars "....e.g.: all Daimler utility vehicles will have the exact same exhaust gas treatment system, whether they are sold in Europe, in the US or in Japan....". That is NOT anywhere near true.
The EU regulations for clean air are less rigorous then the the regulations in force in the early 1980s, in the USA, when we truly did not know how to cleanup emissions. . And NO the European vehicles do NOT have all the the fancy emissions equipment that they put on the cars that they export to America.
Their stupid Greens have sold out, but what would you expect of "liberal" politicians and eco-phonies?
They allow their own automakers to poison their own citizens with crummy pollution equipped cars because the fees and the taxes ,and the regulations, and fuel taxes, and the other taxes, have driven the average European into driving the least costly tiny, unsafe, pregnant roller skate that they can. Just for an example, the EU allows diesels to be sold that emit 90% more NOx than is allowed in the US.
imagine that ONLY 90% more!
And they don't even consider doing anything about it. They have proposed regulations going out ot 2028 and do not have anything proposed to close that gap, even in the pipeline.
Have you ever sat behind a smelly diesel bus breathing all the obnoxious, sooty stink, while bogged down in traffic? I travel to Europe frequently, and that is how all their "Progressive " Western EU cities smell. More than half the vehicles are diesels now and emit that stink.
It is no secret any longer how to clean them up. Our intolerant Eco-Greens did not spend a dime of their own money. They merely demanded the US automakers do so; and then give it away, to everybody else in the world essentially for free. Even with the free technology that they have obtained, and put on the cars that they ship to America, the BMWs and Mercedes and and VWs of Europe and the Japanese Toyotas and Hondas, don't put those same emissions equipment on the cars that they sell there or in Japan. (Just for your information Japan is about 4-5 years BEHIND retarded Europe in its emissions regulations! )
Why don;'t you research it for yourself. You just might learn something. For example the Chinese actually do have emissions regulations . They are patterned, as the Japanese, on the EU regs. But they are about 5 years BEHIND the Japanese, who are 5 years BEHIND the Europeans, who are 35 years BEHIND the US.
Essentially the Chinese have no emissions equipment on their cars.
The proposed and NOT in force EU V and EU VI regulations barely equate to mid 1980s emissions regulations in the USA. And these are the so-called "progressive" socialist regimes that are only out to better humanity . Right! They are no different than the clowns who were creating "People's Democracy in the East Bloc and making a cesspool of the Earth. The biggest environmental cesspool today is now Socialist (mustn't call them Communist) People's Democracy of China.
