Peugeot installs small diesel engine in 407, beats CO2 figure

If I told you a few years ago that a medium-sized sedan would get a 1.6-liter diesel engine, you might have thought that I was crazy. However, Peugeot is on to something since they put a 1.6-liter 110hp HDi diesel in the Peugeot 407, getting a relatively large car that burns just 4.9 l/100 km of diesel (equivalent to 48 mpg) and keeps CO2 emissions at a respectable 129 g/km. The car not only has the thrifty engine that is found in other PSA products like the 207, 308, C4, and Ford's Focus and C-Max, but it also spots the latest Michelin Energy Saver tires for extra fuel savings.

So this gets the same fuel economy as a RWD, 177hp BMW 320d?

back in the 70's and eighties not to mention the 50's and 60's all midsize sedans or saloons as we call them in Britain had 1.6 litre petrol engines or less, this V6 / 2 litre plus fixation is unique to the US and only a very recent phenom in Europe, when I was young in the eighties a 2 litre option was only reserved for the top of the line models, we had a renault 20, and Peugeout 404's, and a Saab 99 Turbo , I'm not sure what size that was but it was quick. I suppose cars have got heavier but I think its just more evidence of the obvious cooperation of the car and big oil industries getting us to consume more and more no matter what the consequences, lets hope we can turn back the clock to where cars and engines were of more reasonable sizes, I think car companies should be working to lighten their cars, as of course some are, but I'm sure more can be done.

That's the modern era for you. Its the same reason that when AutoblogGreen reviewed the current 520d (which, for the record, I would love to try if it was available in the US where I currently live), it was dismissed by some for being "too slow," with an (IIRC) 6-1/2 second 0-60 time. Not that long ago, that was powerful sports car territory!

Indeed...this ridiculous constant need for cars to get faster and faster is for what..I don't know. Other than boosting egos and thumping chests, there's no real reason other than that. A pecker pump for most of these fools would have been cheaper and more useful and a hec of a lot less damaging to our environment.
German and US cars have led the way for sure this over the top madness of bigger, faster, more powerful.
To think that 7 seconds to 60 is somehow "slow"...that's ridiculous.

I have a Renault Megane sedan with a 1.6 diesel in it... fuel consumption is great but it's quite weak. Feels like a small petrol engine on low rpm.
A friend of mine pumped some petrol in it because he was sure it was petrol, and then he said it started to sound like a diesel... I did some explaining. =)
In the long run, it's a winner.. But you need to learn to appreciate it, a quick test drive with the auto dealer is not enough.
Hopefully PSA have fixed some of the inconvience with a small diesel in a big car.
