High performance MINI D could get BMW diesel engines

Recently we heard that MINI was likely to develop a John Cooper Works version of its high-mileage MINI D. AutoCar is now reporting that the car is likely to eschew the Peugeot-sourced engine from the standard model in favor of one of BMW's own engines. The 2.0-liter diesel found in the BMW 120d could find its way under the hood of the JCW MINI D with 177 hp. According to AutoCar, MINI engineers have managed to install the normally longitudinally mounted engine into the transverse engine bay of the MINI. When the MINI launches, the engine is likely to be rated at 150 hp but it could eventually get the full 204 hp found in the 123d. In our reviews, the current MINI D averaged 47 mpg and the 123d got 37 mpg. A 2.0-liter MINI D should be able to get mid-40s without difficulty. The latter BMW gets to 60 mph in about 6.7 seconds, a number that the considerably lighter MINI should easily match. Pilot production of the hi-po MINI D should start in May with full production kicking in about this time next year.

I assume if they would build a JCW diesel BMW would rather opt for the DW10/DW12 family of diesel engines from PSA Peugeot Citroen. They have access to those engines, they are cheaper than th 2.0l BMW diesels and they are more compact.
BMW already announced to change the 1series base models to the Prince engine family which make perfectly sense: An 118i with the 1.6l/150hp Prince engine that is lighter and more torquey than the current n.a. BMW engine seems lots of fun for me.

Great Post! Had a pleasure reading it. Would be nice to BMW revamp and start production of the original shape of Classic Mini only with current BMW technology on hand.. I am a mini fan myself. I have two original Classic minis (one is 1970 Cooper S MkII and one is 1971Custom Convertible with suicide doors and lowered windscreen, and I still enjoy driving them when I have the time. Here is a good mini related site to check out = it’s an Australian Mini directory web site: http://www.miniworld.com.au Has lots of great goodies and ideas there, so check it out!
Cheers Alex

Alex, this custom mini convertible you mentioned sounds pretty cool - anywhere I can check out some pictures of it?

Hi Declan,
Convertible is now back in a workshop. We've had it painted Ferrari red, all running gear just been put back into the car. Currently at auto electrical workshop, as we are customizing and changing the dash switches (will be all push button including suicide doors start stop & tail gate opening from left to right instead of drop down.)
Please send me your email address and I will email to you some of the images.
Cheers Alex

Hi Alex, some pics of that would be great - I'm currently thinking about
attempting suicide doors on my mini turbo so any help on this would be
much appreciated! You can send any images or advice to

Thanks,
