Fiat eco:drive wins digital technology prize in UK

Fiat has earned some recognition for its new eco:Drive system that debuted last fall at the Paris Motor Show. During the recent MediaGuardian Innovation Awards in London, eco:Drive won the top prize for digital technology. The eco:Drive system allows the driver to plug a USB flash drive into the car so that driving data can be automatically downloaded. The driver can then plug in the flash drive to a computer where software can analyze the data and make suggestions about adjusting driving style to improve efficiency. eco:Drive is included free of charge on most new Fiats.

How is schlepping a usb drive around better than the instant mileage & recent mileage history available in real time in the prius, fusion, insight, etc...?
This is something that only a nerd(not normal people) will do one time, say meh, and forget about it. Only hypermilers would ever do this more than once.
You want to create some new tech that will actually save gas? Create a smart cruise control that keeps the speed close to a given number, but allows the car to go a bit faster downhills and a bit slower up hills a range of +3/-3 or +4/-4 would considerably improve mileage when using cruise.

Of course the car shows instant and average consumtion too, a Prius is way way way out of a Grande Punto's price range. Smart cruise like you describe already exist on heavy trucks and some cars.
