SAE 2009: Arnold Schwarzenegger goes shopping for his next HUMMER

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't kidding when he said that there's nothing wrong with HUMMERs. Soon after finishing his opening session talk at the SAE World Congress this morning, the Governator took a stroll through the expo floor and spent some time at the U.S. military's booth. The display area showcased a few vehicles, but Arnold was most interested in a green hybrid HUMMER, the XM1124 He High Mobility Multupurpose Wheeled Vehicle (aka the HMMWV) and the Reconnaissance Surveillance and Targeting Vehicle (RST-V) Demonstrator (above). Is it just me, or are the people who come up with these names the same ones who named all the G.I. Joe action playsets back in the '80s?
In any case, the HMMWV uses a diesel series hybrid powertrain with li-ion batteries to go up to 20 mph for up to six miles. It can also supply 15 kW of power to a range of military tools in the field (at least, it can do this in testing). The RST-V also has a hybrid powertrain can output 20 kW of power and can operate on diesel power only, battery power only or in hybrid mode.

WTF is this bullshit...
That jackass just raised our state tax on goods to 10% and now he's checking out Hummers to buy? Give me a fucking break. This asshole needs the boot. We don't need Hybrid Hummers, that is an oxymoron! Furthermore, we need to do away with the ungodly amounts military spending and use that money to get solar panels on people's roofs... not hybrid hummers. I don't know why I live in CA sometimes.

I guess when he found out that the "Hydrogen Hummer" he had ordered has a driving range less than the average NEV, he decided maybe a hybrid would make more sense...

I noticed that te old hummer wasn't armored on the bottom, just alumium panels. That was a terrible weakness. It costed many G.I. lifes in afganistan, thats very sad. Bluff outside thin on the bottom.
In Europe Hummers can not ride on public roads. The are made too dangerous for that. Sharp steel bars are life treathning for pedestrians and cyclists.
A Hybrid engine doesn't make a big difference. Yes it may be a good publicity stunt to say yes we are environamently frendly. Of course as I have just read not all Americans will fall for that. Hummers have nothing to do in public roads it is just a car for people that want to bluff.
Hybrid power;
However it can be a gadjet for tactical missions becos an electric power train doesn't make so much noise. And I am shure it is a good start to use a new tecnology. Maybe furter on it will develop for use in Trucks and Tanks.
