Shanghai 2009: Roewe 750 Hybrid and EV

In addition to the hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain that we saw the other day, China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) is also experimenting with hybrid and fully electric powertrains in its Roewe 750 sedan. Not surprisingly, SAIC is working with corporate partner General Motors on the hybrid system, which is very closely related to GM's own mild hybrid system and is supplied by American auto parts supplier Delphi. SAIC expect the hybrid Roewe 750 to boast fuel economy and emissions improvements of around 20 percent over the standard model.
Also on display at the Shanghai Motor Show is a fully electric Roewe 750. Details are scarce, but our Chinese colleagues report a top speed of a little over 90 miles per hour (150 kph) and a range of 124 miles (200 kilometers) after a charge of 6-8 hours. We'd imagine there's some sort of lithium-based battery technology lurking under the sheetmetal somewhere.

This must be the heyday of Chinese auto making, and some of them look good. As Detroits flagship brands are going by the wayside, there are a dozen new foreign brands taking their place. Their business models must be working.

This Roewe is basically a UK Rover 75 with very slightly different bodywork. Although Rover as a brand was regarded by many as being for old people (think Lincoln or Cadillac equivalent), the 75 platform had really good crash safety, a great ride and the 75 still comes out extremely well in customer ownership surveys. As long as the Chinese don't build it with inferior quality parts then buying one of these will be a decent bet...

I'm waiting for the Roewe too and I've been looking for any kind of news regarding the release planning. Last year we heard that it's going to be ready Q1 of 2009 but so far no news. Does anybody out there know any more?

I am one of the people who are still driving one of
these Rovers , and it is a great car . It has a feeling
of solidity uncommon in anything but the most expense
German brands , returns great gas mileage , is very quiet
and reliable , an all round great family touring car .
Unfortunately its reputation was destroyed by Mr Clarkson
and Co at top gear in a similar way to how they tried
to wreck the reputation of the "Tesla" !
Maybe I will get the chance to replace my 75 with a nice
new "Roewe 75 " EV in the future .
