Foreign Affairs Auto named as official Hymotion PHEV kit installer

A123 Systems has named Foreign Affairs Auto of West Palm Beach Florida as an authorized installer for its Hymotion L5 plug-in conversion kits. The L5 kit consists of a battery pack containing A123 lithium iron phosphate cells designed to be installed in the second-generation Toyota Prius. The kit transforms the Prius into a plug-in hybrid with theoretical mileage of 100 mpg or more. Foreign Affairs Auto is one of only 12 authorized installation sites for the kit in the United States. The installation is actually a pretty straightforward process, but the system doesn't come cheap. The kit costs $10,395 but the actual benefits are questionable.
The kit fits into the space under the rear cargo floor in the Prius but, since the rest of the powertrain is unchanged, the ability of the car to operate in all electric mode is still limited by motor power. That means that even with a full charge, it won't be like driving a full speed electric car. What it will do is allow the normal hybrid boost mode to operated longer until the lithium pack is depleted. When regularly plugged in, converted Priuses typically average from the mid-50s to mid-60 mpg range unless you hypermile.

PRESS RELEASE:
Foreign Affairs Auto selected by A123 Systems to be the exclusive HYMOTION Dealer for Florida to provide New L5 Plug-in Hybrid Conversion Systems for the Toyota Prius
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--Foreign Affairs: Zero!, a division of Foreign Affairs Auto, Inc., dedicated to providing transportation solutions for businesses, institutions, individuals, and fleets in order to cut energy costs, energy consumption, and carbon emissions has been selected as one of only twelve certified installation centers in the US to exclusively offer the HYMOTION L5 Plug-in Prius Conversion Module from A123 Systems. The L5 Module allows Foreign Affairs to convert Prius Hybrid Vehicles into Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) capable of achieving 100+ Miles per Gallon.
"We are extremely honored and excited to have been hand-chosen by A123 Systems to partner our efforts in offering Prius Plug-in Hybrids that are available Today," says Jonathan Ortiz, Executive Director of Foreign Affairs Auto. "The HYMOTION Conversion Module is as close as you can get to an actual OEM product as it is fully accredited and meets all Federal Government Crash Standards. Our clients are unwilling to wait another 2 to 3 years for the OEM's and wanted PHEV's now."
A123 Systems officially announced the appointment for Foreign Affairs as a Certified HYMOTION Installation Partner (CHIP) in January 2009. "We applaud our nation's administration for providing strong incentives for businesses, individual consumers, and municipalities to lower their carbon footprint through individual vehicles. The Plug-in Hybrid simply does just that," continued Jonathan Ortiz. "Since the appointment from A123 Systems, we have created three new job positions and since filled them. We feel very proud to do our part in creating these 'green-collar' jobs intended by the Stimulus Act."

Your clients are confused people with more money than brains, who are spending $10K+ to have some trivial savings in gas with a vehicle not really suited to PHEV operation.
I like the Prius, but sticking a bigger battery in it doesn't give it any practical EV mode. This make zero economic sense as their will be trivial gas savings compared to the price involved.
100mpg for 40 miles. (not 40 miles of EV). On a Prius that means you just saved 0.5 gallons of gas (versus 50mpg without kit) and after that you revert to normal.
So if you saved the maximum 365 *3 years (warranty period, don't trust it much longer than that) = 500 gallons of gas before they warranty expired. You might save $1500 at $3 gas.
And you only paid $10 000 to do it.
Heck sell your Prius and get a Volt instead, at least you can drive around in full EV mode while you waste your money. This is just brain dead.

Hey, if you're going to be ultra-miserly, then perhaps you should just buy a used econobox and drive slowly and as little as possible, or even better, get a cheap scooter or bicycle.
There is more to life than finding the very cheapest way to live.

This is been out for a while. Foreign Affairs is obviously committed to the environment and emerging technologies, for that I applaud their efforts. I would like to see them expand to embrace more capable EV vehicles in the near future. Foreign Affairs certainly has the leverage to serve as an introductory platform of alternative vehicles to all South Floridians.

I recently converted my 2008 Toyota Prius to a Hymotion PHEV at Foreign Affairs and have to proudly say that my car operates even better than I ever expected. The module and the way it is integrated is brilliant. If you train yourself on how to keep the gas engine from kicking on, I can absolutely get up to 40 miles of EV operation. Once you own and drive a Hymotion PHEV, you learn the little tricks on how to stay on EV power.
PeterG: "Heck sell your Prius and get a Volt instead..." I just called my local GM dealer and I told the sales department that I wanted to buy a Volt today. The guy chuckled and told me that it was NOT possible because they are NOT on the market!
The decision to convert my Prius to a PHEV was not soley an economic decision. Yes, I am able to get 100-150 Miles per Gallon total average because my daily commuting is less than 40 total miles around town. Yes, it is fantastic that I only fill up every QUARTER! and Yes, if, and when oil continues to climb in the future, I have already made my investment to cover my interests.
However, more important, I invested in the technology because I support the movement and if more and more people take the sidelines approach to these technologies, then they will never get off the ground. Our nation has too much to lose if we just continue to neglect our nation's security issues and energy problems.
