Citroen unveils new new 3.0L V6 diesel, more power, less fuel

Citroen is replacing its existing 2.7-liter diesel V6 with a new 3.0-liter model that, thanks to the latest technology, allows it to make more power from less fuel. That also means it emits less CO2 along the way. Output in the new engine goes from 208 hp to 240 hp. The 3.0-liter with a 6-speed automatic transmission is available in both the C5 and C6 models and earns a combined rating of 31.6 mpg (U.S.) on the EU drive cycle, an impressive feat for these large cars. That's an improvement of 13-17% based on the model. The new engine uses the third generation of Citroen's common rail fuel system along with a diesel particulate filter. The CO2 emissions with the 3.0-liter are reduced 12-15% to 195 g/km.

PRESS RELEASE:
FIRST DETAILS – CITROËN'S NEW 3.0HDi V6 DIESEL - MORE POWER, YET BETTER ECONOMY & LESS CO2
Citroën has released first details of an advanced 3.0HDi V6 240hp engine to be introduced to the C5 and C6 ranges later this summer. The unit is the most powerful production engine in the history of the Marque.
It delivers the neat trick of offering more power and improved performance, alongside better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. The new engine improves fuel economy by 13-17% and reduces CO2 by 12-15%, compared to the current 2.7HDi V6 208hp unit.
With advanced new engine technology, the new V6 diesel incorporates the third generation of Citroën's common-rail direct injection system and offers drivers a refined driving experience with its quiet operation and more efficient performance. Delivering an abundance of torque, the new V6 diesel provides exceptional driving pleasure for every-day motoring.
Fuel saving features in the new engine include a piloted alternator, which recovers energy during deceleration and braking. The engine also fully complies with future Euro V standards, ahead of the compulsory introduction to production vehicles in January 2011.
Mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the powerful and efficient unit means drivers can now benefit from up to 38mpg on the combined cycle. Highlighting Citroën's continuing commitment to the environment, not only does this engine come with a Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS) for an ultra-clean exhaust, but CO2 emissions are also reduced to 195g/km.
The improved emissions also put both new C5 and C6 V6 diesel models into the lower Tax band J, creating a saving of £325 on cars registered in the 2010/11 RFL period.

I would buy the wagon (if only they sold them in the US).

What a fantastic looking wagon. It's easily the best looking wagon ever produced.
What are the chances that Citroen will re-enter the American market. I'd buy that wagon in a heartbeat.
Wow!

A 3.0l here in Europe is quite excessive. A 2.0l would be more than enough but I can't argue with the engineers.

Yeah, why can't we get some Citroën love in the states? PSA Peugeot Citroën is sold in 150 countries around the world, and we can't get them in the US!? WTF France? We get one lousy statue from you and now you're too good for us? Whatever, I didn't want your stupid >> on my car anyway.

Indeed 3.0 is a bit large but it's the Exclusive edition so it's not supposed to be the main seller, just a way to attract the BMW-crowd. I'd easily get a C5 over a 5-series wagon, the C5 got so much style I still turn my head everytime I pass by one.

3.0 is not large displacement. C5 is as fat and heavy as a pig.
2.0 HDi diesel estate weights 1700 kilograms = 3748 pounds
2.7 HDi diesel saloon weights Earth crusihing 1849 kilograms = 4076 pounds
And this is just a midsize car, like Camry. For the same of comparison, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, a car some call heavy, weights 3680 pounds = 1669 kilograms. V6 260HP Camry weights 3493 pounds.
But, true, the Citroen is very styling and pretty.

The US government are to blame for the lack of Citroens over that side of the pond unfortunately.
With strange laws requiring constant fender to ground distance they made it illegal to sell their superior hydraulic suspension cars. Aerodynamic headlights and steering linked headlights were also bizzarely banned.
So very few Americans have had the pleasure of experiencing the DS, Xm's, CX's, Xantias (including the now rare Activa).
