AutoCar is reporting that Nissan will publicly unveil its new electric car on August 2 in Japan. The debut is planned to coincide with the opening of the automaker's new global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. The actual production version of the car is expected to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October. Production of the five-passenger hatchback will launch in 2010 at the company's Oppama plant in Japan with initial volumes of about 50,000 units.
The first cars will go into test fleets in various countries around the world with production gradually ramping up through 2011 and into 2012. By late 2012, Nissan expects to add production of up to 150,000 units per year in the U.S. thanks to the DOE loan that was announced on Tuesday morning.

Shame they didn't spend a bit more on styling! Tesla Roadster, model S and Pininfarina BlueCar are all beautiful so there's no reason for an EV not to be a looker.

How do you know what it looks like? Nissan won't be showing the car publicly until August. The prototype is just a first generation Cube to test powertrain components.

In addition to Sam's comment, the outline of the drawing above looks very Versa-like. If this isn't going to be a completely new car (the drawing may be to show components, not exterior design), the Versa or something similar wouldn't be a bad looking EV.

That's good news, I think it was going to be that box design!

Judging be the shape, looks like we have an eVersa coming.

That silhouette looks similar to the Versa, but there are some key differences. I hope it's just a generic car shape and not an actual representation of the vehicle. I don't like the Versa, and this shape is even worse. Nissan, form follows function, but that doesn't mean it needs to be ugly!

I don't care the looks. If it sits 5, 100 mile range (@ highway speed, not 25mph), & < $30K, I am in.

Please no $45,000 EV hatchback smaller than the Festiva!

If it looks like their EV-02 prototype, some demented egg or costs over $30K, who cares?
If it looks more like the Tesla Model-S or Chevy Volt and nets out under $30K... yea, baby!

Capabilities definitaly outweigh looks in importance, I'm still glad it's not going to be that box though ;-)
