BMW plans "most advanced small engine ever"
Lending further credence to rumors that BMW will be launching a new engine line that will feature three and four cylinders and comparatively small displacements is a report from Channel 4 in the UK that quotes BMW chief engineer Holger Winkelmann as saying the German automaker will soon launch the "most advanced small engine range ever."
Winkelmann goes on to say that the new engine architecture will draw heavily on BMW's turbocharging, direct injection, variable valve timing and intake technology as featured on the automaker's excellent range of powerplants available today. Interestingly, Winkelmann suggests that these new three- and four-cylinder engines will replace a number of BMW's classic inline-sixes.
Earlier reports suggested that this new line would use engines as small as 1.35 liters and up to 1.8 liters. Power output would range from 163 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque up to a high-performance unit with as much as 321 horsepower.

In other news BMW is also plans to introduce the "most advanced buggy whips ever" using new carbon fiber nanotube technology. The whips combination of light weight materials and high tensile strength reduce forearm fatigue by 27%. It comes with a lifetime warranty and they promise that this is the last buggy whip you will ever need to buy.

See, this is why i switched over from Honda to BMW. BMW almost is always ahead of the game in terms of fuel efficiency, engine technology, and refinement in their powertrains. Although their engines are typically larger and vehicles are heavier, per liter of displacement they oust pretty much everything.
Not sure when these engines are coming, but we'll probably get medium-large size 4 cylinder motors. There was an article about a 2.0l direct injected motor that was putting out 170hp and 155ft-lb of torque. I would not be suprised if we saw that in the 1 series.. now only if they had a 2 door hatch 120ti.. :)

Well i switched from Honda to Ferrari. The F430 gets way more power per liter and weighs less than your typical BMW. Ferrari is almost always ahead of the game in terms of engine technology and refinement in their powertrains.......apples oranges
