Skoda introduces new 1.2L three cylinder, coming to a VW soon

The low price Czech-based division of the Volkswagen group, Skoda, has started producing a revised version of its 1.2-liter three cylinder engine. The powerplant is debuting in the Fabia but will soon spread to its platform-mates within the group, the VW Polo, Seat Ibiza and possibly even the upcoming Audi A1.
Changes to the engine include refinements like a cogged belt to drive the camshafts in place of the old timing chain and a lighter crankshaft. The reduced weight will help the triple run smoother and reduce fuel consumption. The three cylinder is built at the Škoda plant in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic. The factory produced over 270,000 of the engines in 2008. The revised engine will be applied to other VW Group models over the next year.

Small turbo charged 3 cylinder engine + TwinDrive = VW group hybrid platform

I saw nothing about it having a turbo. Is that what the engine comes with in Europe? This might be a good engine choice for the BlueSport concept if it was turbocharged and made 140hp+

1.2 HTP is probably the worst, most underpowered and least efficient engine in the entire universe.
In a tiny subcompact car Skoda Fabia (size of Toyota Yaris) it returns real life 6,51 l/100km= 36 mpg US [1], offering woeful performance of 0-60 in some 15+ seconds.
36 mpg US is what you get from the Toyota Camry hybrid [2] spacious midsize car, blasting from 0 to 60 in 8.6 seconds.
Deep regret go to European that "drive" this 1.2 HTP thing.

Mr. downtotheearth:
did you EVER drived any car from the Volkswagen group fitted with that engine?
were, in the America?
So, please not this: just speak about what you tried and experienced
This engine can provide consuptions as low as 4.2 liter per 100Km as also 10.4 Liter per 100Km
I do not find any science on this broadband, just remind you that consuptions depend on your driving style, behaviour, traffic conditions, etc...
For god sake, just post relevant things.
cheers

Cooldown, I have driven the 1.2L HTP in a Fabia and Downtoearth is right - it sucks.
It's the most underpowered, inefficient 1.2L engine sold - It religiously gets around 9 kms per litre vs. 11-12 for powerplants from Suzuki, Honda and even Hyundai.
VW can't make good Normally aspirated Petrol engines. Period. Their newer turbo units are quite impressive though.
Bottom line - stay away from the 1.2 unless government testing shows a remarkable improvement in numbers.

well I just can say that for 30.000Km I managed to get from a 1.080Kg car fitted with air conditioner the average of 6.1 Liter per 100Km.
Of course I agree that it's not few but was rewarding to see that everiday driving, I could get easily 5.3 liter per 100Km as average...
Not to mention that the top speed that sometimes I reached was far above the top one mentioned by the manufacturer.
I those circumstances, the calculated consumption was 10.4 liter per 100km.
But I'm not fat... for shure was that, my weight was far bellow the weight of the factory testers...

unfortunately it is really really really bad engine in the really ... bad car :-) I am from Czech Rep. and I have limited experience with it. It can make 4.2 L/100km driving some 60 Km/hour. In every other case it is very thirsty engine - because it is underpowered. On highway 140 Km/hour it could take 10 or even 12 L/100Km!!! They are making it because it is very cheap not ecological! I am not praising some 6,5l HEMI or something but this is the smallest engine that could move Skoda Fabia :-) it is loud and vibrating... Volkswagen introduced their own 1.2 4 cilinder engine (this has only 3 cilinders) turbocharged, that could be it. But not this 1.2 HTP (Hodne To Pojede - ironically something like Will Drive Like Crazy :-) )
