Report: Mitsubishi to build extended-range EVs, too

When General Motors introduced the Volt concept two years ago, nobody seriously expected the Detroit automaker to be the only one to go down the extended range electric vehicle path. In fact, at that same auto show, Ford showed its own AirStream concept using the same idea. Now, it looks like one of the biggest proponents of battery electric vehicles is going down the range extender path: It's being reported that Mitsubishi will not be content to simply offer plug-in only cars like the iMiEV.
The report says Mitsubishi's range extended EV could be based on the cX concept that appeared at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. That concept was powered by a clean diesel engine. An ER-EV version would use a battery pack with sufficient capacity for 40 miles of electric driving with a small gasoline engine to provide a charge sustaining mode after that. The Mitsubishi ER-EV is expected to hit the streets at the end of 2010, just about the same time as the Volt.

selling at tan-ta-daaannnn . . . price close to the volt and tesla S. Enthusiasm for the imiev went down the drain when it's price was announced. I expect the same to happen here.

The idea of installing a range extender into a battery ev make more sence then not installing one. I won't buy a limited ressource car. But the thing is is that we almost have no data at all on the mpg we can make with these small range extender. Im sure a well constructed small compact electric generator fitted to a lightweight ev can return 100 mpg+. There is an amazing choice of possibility too for the range extender design, small piston engine with boilers, small turbines, efficient rectifiers and adapted transformers and all sort of transistorised power and state of charge electronics management systems, gps power management for the battery, solar panels on the car or at home and portable windmills for the night.
This website along the green industry is devellopped at 1% approx. The rest is noise. Just imagine how far is the flying car if we cannot even buy today a limp green car adapted for the roads

Take away the gas stations and you would be driving a limited resource car right now.

Great news. I hope they explore that clean diesel range extender as well.

That sucker's ugly. That bottom-sucking vacuum cleaner grill is hideous.
